General VTEC Questions

Hi,

New member here. Also, new to Hondas. I have a few general questions.

I ended up with a 2000EX with a blown engine. I found a used, 1996 1.6 VTEC with 175000 miles on it and it runs good. My questions are:

- Is the 96 the same engine as a 2000?
- What is the easiest way to visually identify a 1.6 VTEC?
- What is the best brand/source of parts for:
- Head gasket kit?
- Timing belt and water pump?
- Fluids (antifreeze and oil)?
- Spark plugs, etc..

Thanks in advance for your guidance!

Re: General VTEC Questions

Step 1: Compare engine codes, if they match it's a direct swap
Also google your engine code and locate it on wikipedia,

Typical 5 character code:

Look for the VTEC valve on the rear of the head:

NGK or DENSO plugs
I use Honda parts.
If you don't need valve stem seals you may be able to piece together necessary gaskets cheaper than buying a complete kit.

MANY real Honda dealers sell parts online at wholesale prices, typically 20-30% below MSRP.
