Re: P0420 - Problem

If there are no exhaust leaks (cracked manifold?) between the engine and the cat, then it most likely needs a cat.
It needs a GOOD cat.
And you need to determine why this cat went bad, and correct it if possible or necessary.
This came up in a bulletin search http://www.tegger.com/hondafaq/p0420/A05-027.pdf

There is no FS2, there is no bank 2. Therefore, the reader says "fault". It means nothing.

EDIT: HOLD UP! Is this on the engine you are asking about 3 stage VTEC?

Re: P0420 - Problem

Yes it is, sorry forgot to put that on this one.

Its a D15 With a Vtec head and 3 stage vtec

I had alot of idle/misfire problems, ended up being a bad intake gasket. That probably caused the cat to go bad

if its just the cat ill run it without one.

Not a street driven car

Clear the codes and see how long it takes to reset the cat code again?

Re: P0420 - Problem

I clear it all the time cause the light bothers me
It takes about 50 miles to come back on, maybe a bad 02?

That sounds like probably 2 trip cycles to set a matured code.

maybe a bad 02?
Doubt it, there's like 8 different codes that are supposed to cover O2 sensor faults for that year.

I'm sure there could be an occasional false cat code out there, but that is rare on Hondas IMO. I have found cat fail codes to be pretty reliable in general on Hondas.

If the other stuff I mentioned is ok (exhaust leaks), and the computer has good fuel control, then......
Sometimes we just have to trust the computer.

If the engine has been run with misfires and/or poor control of fuel, running far too rich, etc., chances are good the cat is bad. A cat can be ruined in only a matter of minutes under the right (wrong?) conditions.

Re: P0420 - Problem

Will check the exhaust mani and exhaust tomorrow for any leaks.
With my luck its a bad cat caused by all the idle/misfire problems i have had.

Thank you for all your help!
