1998 DX Check engine light, Idle, overheating problems

Ok, first of bear with me. I don't know a whole lot about civics. I'm pretty mechanicly inclined. (nothing extraodinary or anything but I know the basics.) Just not real familiar with Civics and their different engines, etc.

The car is a

1998 Civic DX manual transmission.

I bought this car about a year ago for a good gas mileage car to and from work. The job I had just gotten was 87 miles from home one way and my truck was just killing me on gas. Anyways.........Long story short I got this car and drive it about 3-4k miles per month.

When I first got it I changed the oil, coolant, and spark plugs. Been changing the oil every 5k with Castrol 10w-30.

For a while it had been running hot from time to time. Which I thought was understandable seeing how I'm in Texas in the summer heat and driving 80-100 miles at a time can cause the little engine to get hot. It would never stay hot just would creep up and then go back down shortly after coming up. Usually towards the end of my drive when I was having to stop at stop lights and having higher RPMs. Makes sense to me.

Anyways I've been topping off the coolant now and then (not much, I doubt there's a leak) and it's been doing pretty good.

Not sure if that's a problem witht he vehicle or just a product of the driving conditions.

Anyways.....Check engine light came on a few weeks ago. Took it to O'Reilly and ran the codes. Couldn't get one. The problem it was having was a high idle.

I just left it alone and the code went away the next day. A few days later it was due for an oil change so I went ahead and changed it and also changed the fuel filter as well.

Well a day or two after the change the high idle came back and the next day the idle was up and down, up and down. Fluctuating. I don't have a Tachomoter on the car so I can't tell what RPMs it was running at but it keeps doing this.

Took it to get the codes pulled again yesterday and it came up:

Idle Control
Cyl 1 Misfire
Misfie Detected
Idle Air Control.

Any ideas on what it could be? I currently have the negative battery lead disconnected just in case it's a computer problem. Figure I'l let it reset.

What should I do next?

It should also be noted that the guy before me had a Air Intake System and Filter installed. Not sure if that makes a difference or not.

Also, since I'm here..............My AC won't work. it blows, just not cold. I charged it with r134a with stop leak several times. Any ideas on what to do next? This Texas summer heat is killing me but I hate paying somebody to do work that I can do myself.

Thanks in advance!

Re: 1998 DX Check engine light, Idle, overheating problems

A/C I can't diagnose.

But the IACV is located on the back side of the intake manifold. next to the Throttle body. Unhook the 2 coolant lines under it, unhook the plugs and remove the 2 12mm Bolts. Spray it out with brake cleaner as best you can and re-install it. Then make sure to bleed out your coolant system.

As for your misfire, replace your distributor cap, rotor and spark plug wires and see if that helps.

Let us know what happens after this.

Clened out that IACV petty good with carb cleaner and pu it back on. Clered the idl problem right up!

Check engine light came back on on the way to work this morning. I'm gonna run the codes again and see what they say now that the idle problem is fixed
