Rings/pistons?
Rings/pistons?
I have a 96 dx, I'm told I have a d16 sohc motor.. Recently on a road trip the temp went redline really fast as soon as I was in stop-go traffic.. Added a quart of oil and drove home.. On the drive it started really lagging under 2000rpms and really ******* out.. Anyway, burnt up 2 qts of earl since Thursday.. Does anyone have suggestions of what I should look for to get a motor I can just drop in and not swap transmissions or any major work.. Should I get parts and rebuild the 1.6 I have or just look for a jy donor?

For most people, it's cheaper to simply drop in another good used engine.....but you better figure out why the first engine overheated so you don't ruin the next engine.
Re: Rings/pistons?
Thanks Carlos danger.. Are there any good places to find a d16y7 online or just look local? Also I'd say the overheat was from the radiator fins being all smashed and crappy, new thermostat too.. What's a good radiator or just go oem replacement?

You better make sure the radiator fan works, and runs when it is supposed to run. Every time.
Just sayin....

Once you buy from someplace far away, you might get into all kinds of shipping issues, and they multiply if there is an issue that requires the engine to be pulled out and sent back. So think long and hard about that. Is it worth it?
Local reputable auto recyclers yard is probably best if you want a warranty that isn't a huge hassle.
Where I work, we have access to a few that operate in multiple states and have their own delivery trucks, so dealing with these places is pretty easy for us.
No matter what, you are buying a used engine. It may not be perfect. This is why you want some warranty on it. You never know, you may realize 5000 miles down the road that the thing uses oil like it's going out of style.
Some places won't give much warranty to a DIYer, mainly because they have no way of knowing if you are capable of installing it without damaging anything. (Some mechanics can't even get that done either!)
It is usually recommended that you do whatever you can to freshen the unit prior to installation---timing belt, water pump, any seals and gaskets, etc.
If the car is super nice, you might consider a remanufactured engine. Jasper is one national rebuilder.. Google for others.
I would probably just go with whatever cheap radiator the local parts store has.

Yeah the fan looks rough but it seems to run when it's supposed to.. It hasn't seemed to lose power until it gets hot so ill start with radiator and thermostat and keep looking in the junkyards for another engine.. I'm leaning towards a rebuild kit off of eBay pistons/rings, etc.. Around 300.. Drop in the jy engine and build the one in it now.. As long as the jy donor doesn't burn as much oil as this one Ill be a step ahead.. I figured I'd check with the guys that work directly with Hondas regularly would know of the best deals and best stuff to use, that's why I asked here..

Oh. I don't actually rebuild at work.....It's either new, used, or reman. Takes liability off the shop and the tech.
I have done several of my own though. NBD.
Don't let the current engine overheat and trash the new radiator. The plastic neck can be damaged (FROM) steam erosion.
Don't forget to take care of the warped head.

Are there any sensors in the radiator I should replace while I'm at it? The radiator on advance auto looks cheesy and the comments say its half thickness of factory? Get napa rad? What's your opinion?

Re: Rings/pistons?
Look in your radiator for sensors. (doubt it on something that old).
No opinion on the rad. I'd use aftermarket though in most cases, even if they are a bit of a hassle sometimes.
