Cylinder 1 random misfire
Cylinder 1 random misfire
This is the second time this has happened to me this year. I go to start my civic and it starts really rough. Lots of vibration and sounds like it is going to die out. Then the rpm's go up to normal and runs just like it always does. This makes the check engine light come on with code 71, Cylinder 1 random misfire. I reset the ECU and the light went off. I just want to know what causes this to happen and if it is something I should get fixed.
Thanks in advance!

Re: Cylinder 1 random misfire
First, don't reset the light and take it to Autozone and have them scan for further codes. Might give ya a better idea where to look.
Possible causes:
1. clogged injector, injector leak, air leak
2. fuel injector circuit open or shorted
3. spark plug carbon deposits, fouling, or malfunction
4. ignition wires open, or leaking
5. distributor malfunction
6. low compression
7. valve clearance out of spec
8. VTEC malfunction (D16Y5, D16Y8, and D16A2 engines)
9. O2 sensor
10. O2 sensor circuit
I would start with ignition (plugs) and then maybe fuel if it doesn't give ya any further codes.
*Before any of ya say "WTF does VTEC have to do with a hard start?" I'll tell ya I got it straight from the manual and have no idea.

Re: Cylinder 1 random misfire
Well, wait. The spark is either advanced or retarded depending on the situation. If the spark is say retarded, it's firing way after TDC. I dunno. Variable valve timing has to deal with that stuff, so maybe that's why? Lol. I'm looking way too into that one area of information. I don't even know if what I just posted even makes any damn sense.
Re: Cylinder 1 random misfire
VVT has nothing to do with it lol.. was just a joke (based on laz's sig)
In fact VVT does not even come on until the upper RPM range so it doesnt make sense. If it's firing after TDC that can only be a timing issue, if your timed during regular operation your timed during Vtec ... If it ran rough all the time that would make sense... It's probably a dirty throttle body or a dirty injector.. or quite possibly a failed head gasket.

i have new distributor, ignition coil, plugs, plug wires and o2 sensor so those shouldn't be an issue. I can take it in to Autozone but will that really narrow it down much?
