Key stuck in ignition in 1998 Civic

I have a 1998 Honda Civic EX and I accidently put my 1992 Honda Civic key in the ignition. Now the key is stuck in there. I don't know how it went in so easily, but now I can get it back to the "OFF" position to get the key out. Any suggestions for DIY?

Here's a diagram of the key cylinder (from hondapartsnow.com), and a DIY from eHow:

Have fun taking it apart, keep us updated

Spray some lube in there and wiggle it.

edit: Ok, that sounded really horrible. lol. I meant lock lube.

If he can't get it back to the "off" position the key, lodged or not, wouldn't be able to come out.

With lube you may be able to get it to turn back to OFF if the cylinder is worn enough. It sounds like it may be worn enough considering it turned to ON. Otherwise it's dis-assembly.

Re: Key stuck in ignition in 1998 Civic

1. use a phillips screwdriver to remove the lower ignition cover. 3 screws
2. remove lower ignition cover.
3. use a security torx 30, to remove screw on bottom of ignition,
4. use a pic or a small screwdriver to push in pin on top of ignition switch.
5. remove ignition switch (switch needs to be in position 1)
