My Honda seems to have the Hiccups??? Any ideas??

Hello. I have a 99 Civic, 5spd standard. Its the 1.6ltr. I just got the car. My problem is with acceleration. When I BEGIN accelerating, or if I'm under any kind of load, the engine seems to cut out a little. Its like it hiccups a bit when I give it gas. If I just accelerate at a normal pace, it does not happen. If I hit the gas at higher RPM's it does not happen. If I'm on a hill, or there are people in the car, it does the hiccup. Also, it does not idle totally even. Its not a bad idle, but its not great either.

My check engine light was on until yesterday also. I unplugged the battery to put my radio in and the check engine light never came back on.

Someone suggested I use injector cleaner, which I did. It did help a little, but not totally. But someone also suggested the timing belt! Its due in another 15,000Kms.

Any thoughts??
I'd hate to have the belt break, that would be terrible. I'm going to change it anyway, but I'm not sure thats actually my problem.

Thanks so much!

Sounds like a dirty throttle body or malfunctioning IACV (Idle air intake valve).

im about 95% sure its not the timing belt the engine would have a loud tick all the time as long as your engine is running and you would know something isnt right. but it sounds like a dirty throttle body start there then come back if that doesnt work

You should have got the code read when it was on. Go to a auto parts store and get it read any way it could still be stored. And have you checked your spark plugs, plug wires and distributor cap. There could be corrosion on the distributor cap.

Sounds like a fuel injection problem. Probably a bad sensor somewhere. Maybee TPS or 02. Get that check engine code and it will point you in the right direction.

Usually is something simple. Ignition wires come bad from the factory more than you might think. Glad to hear you got it fixed and for cheap!

Re: My Honda seems to have the Hiccups??? Any ideas??

Hello everyone.
I have an 02. civic ex and i have the same problem. The difference is that the hiccups start only when the engine is getting hot. My check engine light is on since i have the car and every time I have a new code reading, my last reading was 131 on the first o2 sensor and 420 on the second one. The problem was that they told me that i have a misfire on the reading and it might be an injector. What are my solutions what should i do first?
