1997 1.6SR driveshaft splintered.

I thought the clutch plate had broken as there was a sudden click and was unable to select any gear.A nasty metallic grinding sound was emanating from under the bonnet every time the throttle was pressed. That wasn't quite true as the gear could be selected but you just didn't go anywhere.
So made a set of wing brackets and put a crossbar across the engine bay.Started to remove the gearbox when I realized the off side drive-shaft had splintered.Yes splintered!Just like a piece of wood. This had been hidden by the damper which is exactly where the shaft had separated .I took photos but don't know how to upload them.A second hand shaft was purchased and fitted.Running now makes me realize that the click on takeup and declaration is no longer there and no 'kangarooing ' at all.Which means the drive-shaft was faulty when I bought the car.
Has anyone had or heard of a similar experience ?
