Exclamation 1998 Honda Civic EX (keyless or factory alarm)?!?

I just bought a 1998 Honda Civic EX w/moonroof. It currently has an aftermarket stereo, and it looks like it has an aftermarket security alarm (no remotes, but every once in a while it goes off, and there is a siren under the hood).

Reading the manual it says that the EX model came with at least a keyless system. I've also read that that the alarm/keyless system had something to do with the factory stereo which is missing.

How do I find out without a shadow of a doubt if my particular 1998 Honda Civic EX had a factory Honda security alarm, Honda keyless entry, both, or none?

I've searched extensively here and the internet but no answer. Any answers will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

P. S.:
In case it matters, the Civic is a U. S. auto.

Only a keyless entry system came with the 96 - 00 ex civics. Only 96 - 98 had to worry about keeping the factory radio to keep the keyless entry. Based on what you said .. it sounds like someone put in an aftermarket alarm and all you need to do is find a replacement remote to stop the alarm from going off.

Just so you know the honda accessory alarm piggybacks off the factory radio and uses the factory remote.

Does your dome light work when you open the door?

I would check really low under the radio area to see if the factory radio is hidden there, that will answer a lot of questions.

You need to have the factory radio still installed behind the dash in order for the dome light and factory keyless to work. Can you take apart the lower dash and see if the factory radio is hidden inside?

So you have no dome light and keyless then? For keyless then aftermarket system say an alarm with keyless. As for the dome light I am not sure if there is a way to bypass it.

Re: 1998 Honda Civic EX (keyless or factory alarm)?!?

I have the '00 Civic LX 4-door, and I am having the same issue, b/c I am trying to install an aftermarket radio. In the FACTORY RADIO on your '98 Civic is where the recievers are for BOTH the keyless remote entry and the alarm. You WILL NOT be able to use these features without the factory OEM radio. Also, when I was buying my '00 Civic, I remember that the EX model came with BOTH Alarm and keyless remote entry, standard. These components should still be in your car. Also, standard on the EX, was the Honda factory radio w/CD player. There is a guy selling a '97 OEM Civic radio on Ebay, as I write this, but it is not the one with the CD player. But you don't need it for anything other than the keyless remote entry/alarm system. However, you will need to keep BOTH the factory radio and the aftermarket radio installed in order to keep all features. This is very difficult to acheive; only the best installers can pull this off. It in involves hiding the factory radio somewhere else in the car (usually behind the dashboard), and splicing the main power, ignition, and ground wires from the wire harness. Also , the (aftermarket) wire harness will also have to be adapted to have a prong for the keyless remote entry, which would be the fourth wire you will have to splice. Also, I would imagine that you would also have to purchase another OEM wire harness for the original factory radio. All of this is very complicated; just getting to the radio itself is a huge task. I would not recommend trying this yourself, unless you have a few days off that you can devote to this very difficult task. Honda was stupid to over-engineer this vehicle, providing such little flexibilty. In my 2000 Civic, I still have the factory radio, with a friggin cassette tape deck in the second dim...it is ugly, but I am about to give up on trying to install an aftermarket radio...you have no idea how difficult it is

Let me correct you on a few things.

Keyless is standard the alarm is not, the beep you here has nothing to do with an alarm.

The main deck on 96 to 98's have no CD player just a radio.

You can get a 96 to 98 radio correct, they make special harness that are real easy to install sim to a reg aftermarket radio harness, but has an extra long one that goes the to factory radio that you can hide in the lower middle dash near the cig lighter. Almost plug and play.

Re: 1998 Honda Civic EX (keyless or factory alarm)?!?

If theres an aftermarket stereo you CAN make the dome light work. I did it, it requires you to take out your aftermarket stereo. will post pictures to help.

Pull radio out and look in the cavity where it was, you should have a 16pin gray connector (radio related) , a disconnected 22 pin green connector (security system, not used) and a disconnected 16 pin green connector.

The disconnected 16 pin green connector needs a jumper installed from pin 8 to pin 14 to complete the domelight circuit and fix the issue. Refer to photos for more info but basically put a jumper between the far lower right socket and the 3rd from left socket on same row (bottom row). That should give you your, door activated, dome light back.

Worked like a charm for me on my 98 Honda Civic EX that no longer has its factory radio installed.

Thanks for posting that fix.

When people have aftermarket stereos installed they have to keep the stock radio installed somewhere else in the car. Try looking under the dash, thats a very common place for them to be

Is there a way to add a Honda OEM keyless system to a '98 LX that has an aftermarket radio?

Ima going through the same thing. What I "think" is, if I can find a suitable factory radio pulled from an EX, I can adapt it. The stock way to do it appears to be, purchase a 'relocation cable' and tuck the factory radio somewhere like under your seat... but have its keyless brain plugged into the appropriate plug, the 16pin... Of course, one has to get a faub, and then train the radio/system to respond to it.
First price would be to dissect the factory radio, and take out just the functional part for keyless... not sure if anyone has done that (successfully)...
step one-FIND a stock stereo! ... wish me luck...

Re: 1998 Honda Civic EX (keyless or factory alarm)?!?

i have a '98 ex sedan too with the stock radio but when i got it off the seller he said he didn't have the keyless entry remote for it. i was wondering if i can just go into a honda dealer and get one.

i also found some replacement ones on ebay and was wondering if i can just buy those too. and if i do, should i just follow the programming instructions for it i see on some sites?

and last question. would it be possible to use the key/remote ones from the '03 accord ones so i can keep just one instead of having both the key and remote?

Re: 1998 Honda Civic EX (keyless or factory alarm)?!?

Sorry for the thread necro, but i have a very similar issue...

I have a 1998 Honda Civic Sedan. Base model. I just removed the factory radio in preparation to install an aftermarket radio. As you can see from the picture attached, there are two stock sockets: one grey, one green. I assume that green is for the keyless? I bought the car used, and I never had a keyless fob. So, how can I tell if I have keyless?

Should I try to keep the factory radio in-line and maybe get an aftermarket keyless fob after all this time?

Is there a special harness I can buy to make installation easier?

Thanks to all!!
