Smokey the Honda. d16y7. Bad Timing?
Smokey the Honda. d16y7. Bad Timing?
Recently resolved a surging idle issue on my 97 LX. d16y7.
replaced: PCV valve, IACV, TB, TPS, Fuel Pump, Valve cover gaskets and plug grommets, 4 new NGK Iridiums, new plug wires, new distributor, exhaust manifold.
The car sat for about 6 months after the surging idle started.. got to critical mass with it.. and set it aside.. finally tackled it and replaced everything mentioned above, as well as replaced the clutch.
Surging idle is gone (huzzah!) and car runs better with the new plugs...
but it seems like the timing is a bit off still.. or ... ... something.. the car is running too rich..
Smoke seems black to me.. few others agreed.. don't think it's burning oil.. so really don't think it's the rings or a head gasket..
Question is:
Can bad timing cause the car to smoke lightly on idle and a moderate puff on 5,000 rpm rev?
if so, what should the timing be set at on a d16y7?
NOTE: I've seafoamed the crankcase and gas tank...
getting an oil change tomorrow.. running 5w30 mobil1 synthetic.

black smoke usely means burning fuel too lean or too rich....check your fuel it might be bad since it sat for 6 months also your timeing could be off because of poor spark from the burning crappy fuel......your in tank fuel pump might be at risk for faliure aswell as your fuel filter in the engine compartment..well if you are burning crappy fuel CHANGE YOUR SPARK PLUGS OR CLEAN THEM WITH RUBBING ALCHOAL. your timig will have a effect on the black smoke aswell. does the car hessatate from stop to start like at a stop light if it does that could be your timing too.is the d16y7 throwing a check engine lights if so it could be as simple as a sensor those are the most important things to look for let me know if you have more Q's glad to help you.i put 150,000 miles on that engine before i took it apart rebuild it for race and 500 hp out of it. not as fast as a b18c or a k20 but really close i know that engine like the back of my hand or even my wifes hand....lol

hey AZWETHINKWEIZ before you reset your timeing check and clean the spark plugs and check your fuel. normaly if you start from the fuel and go up the line to your engine all the way to your exhaust YOU WILL FIND AN ANSWER i promise

First sentence in the post said I changed my plugs to NGK iridiums. I've changed my fuel to 93 octane and added seafoam due to the car sitting for a while... My Fuel filter has been replaced...
if the fuel pump was bad would it throw a CEL? (the car isn't throwing codes.)
Also... something I noticed since posting this (as I haven't had a lot of time to drive the car since it's not street legal yet) is that periodically... when I give the car gas... it feels like it inverts the throttle and actually tries to die out... even tho I'm on the pedal... which to me.... kinda screams vacuum leak.
Would a vacuum leak make the car run rich?
