How to spot a cracked head...
How to spot a cracked head...
'96 EX. Been losing coolant for a few weeks. Haven't had the money to address so I've been checking levels every time I stop rolling. This time its been different:
Check car, everything is fine...
Head up the road, temp gauge is good..
Get where I'm going, about fifteen miles total, come to a stop... get steam from under the hood and the temp gauge starts a steady climb.
Pop the hood, find coolant percolating from between the head and intake manifold. Firewall and various whatnots behind the motor are wet.. so tell me...
Have I cracked my head?

Re: How to spot a cracked head...
its hard to know without taking it off and getting it checked at a machine shop. maybe its the intake manifold leaking? is coolant leaking anywhere else other than head/im? does the oil look normal?
Re: How to spot a cracked head...
Compression check turned out fine, so the head gasket should be cool. Took the intake manifold off and that gasket is gone, no coolant loss anywhere else. buut...
Oil looks great at the dipstick and under the valve cover, but at the head/intake mounting surface, that chamber inbetween the intake runners (2 to the left, 2 to the right, what I assume is a coolant passage in the middle). In that hole there's this milky coolant/something conglomerate. But I think its RTV or whatever, the old intake gasket was globbed with it.
In the process of getting the IM off, popped the fuel rail off... and broke the plastic cap off the end of one of the injectors.
The injector closest to the trans (is that #1?), brown plastic cap on the needle end, very brittle on that one injector, the others are fine....
is this replacable or am I ordering a new injector?

Re: How to spot a cracked head...
if the plastic is part of the injector, its not sold separately. just replace that and the manifold gasket and hope everything is fine.
