I have a 2002 Civic LX with a manual transmission. I'd like your recommendations on places to purchase a replacement motor, used
or rebuilt. On a scale of 1-5 (5 being a trained mechanic) how would you
rate it as a DIY project?
Thanks

eh.. I'd rate it at a 3 as far as swapping goes.. So long as it's a straight D17A1 to D17A1 swap. It's not hard. Just really, really labor intensive. Honestly, much more intimidating than hard.
Lots of bolts to remember where they go, lots of electrical connections. At the end of the day, it depends on if you have access to equipment you need: engine hoist, perhaps an engine stand, miscellaneous tools to remove things. I was able to pull my engine with the tranny attached, out from the top, despite the manual telling me to drop the subframe and pull it out through the bottom. Once you have the engine out, remove tranny, bolt up to new engine, drop her in, making sure you don't pinch any lines, electrical connections, etc.

I didn't address that since I didn't think O2 sensors would be included in an engine "package"
