Fuel efficiency problem

Hi guys

I recently bought a Honda Civic 2001 because I was sick and tired of putting 20$ of gas a day in my Grand Vitara SUV.

I bought the Civic for really cheap and I changed a lot of parts on it..transmission, exhaust manifold, brakes etc...

In the first 100 km that I did with this car, it took like 14 liters of gas. Is this normal? What do you guys recommend? I checked my tires and they are fine. The only thing that I haven't checked yet is the spark plugs. Do you think that they make that much of a difference in fuel economy?

Thank you very much for the help, it is really appreciated!

Re: Fuel efficiency problem

Thats the equivalent of around 17 mpg....only way that might be normal is if you were driving like a maniac, i average around 30.

Re: Fuel efficiency problem

spark plugs, tire pressure, hopefully they didnt sell it for cheap because of an internal engine problem thats causing poor fuel economy...

Re: Fuel efficiency problem

Also, I noticed that the gas level never moves when I'm driving. It only goes down when I turn on the car essentially.

Re: Fuel efficiency problem

It's cold in Ottawa, so longer warm up times combined with winter blend gas affects fuel economy a bit, not that much though. Is your air filter good, cat functioning, no 02 sensor codes?

My exhaust manifold with the catalytic converter integrated in it has been changed like 1 week ago. We took one from a 03 low-mileage Civic. The O2 sensor has been changed too.

I haven't checked my air filter yet.

Re: Fuel efficiency problem

The air filter has a huge impact on mileage, pick one up asap, I would change the spark plugs as well, that's one of the first things I do after purchasing any used car. Reset the idle as well since you've done quite a bit of recent work, that might help a bit.

Re: Fuel efficiency problem

My sister filled up 37 liters in my car today. It had only been driven 400 km :S My tires are a little big, so it's reading slow but not by that much!

Thats 10 km per liter. Not so good! Maybe once I change my filter it'll make a big difference..

Re: Fuel efficiency problem

Well you said it only seems to go down when the car has been sitting and then started, I would check for fuel leakage around the tank and lines etc.

Re: Fuel efficiency problem

I changed the front O2 sensor and I can now do 420 km on a full tank. Is this okay or still not enough?

Re: Fuel efficiency problem

if your going by the fuel gauge your probably way off hondas are notorious for having fuel gauge inaccuracies. but definitely do a tune up plugs, air filter, oil change.

Dont go by the needle. How many liters did you fill up after doing 420?
