Question header/manifold question

my headers are cracked a tiny bit, but ive noticed the manifold, cat and headers are all one piece on the 01 lx. i was wondering can i get a straight header without the manifold (itd be cheaper) ? and just like punch a hole in the header for my o2 sensor ? or will it throw a code for no longer having the cat

Re: header/manifold question

You can make a new bung hole and plug your O2 sensor without a cat and will not get any codes. You will not pass emissions without the cat.

Re: header/manifold question

emissions isnt an issue where i live anyways , thanks for the advice , when creating the new hole can it be rough or should i get a machine shop to do so

Re: header/manifold question

Just to answer your initial question...

Figure a is the lx/dx exhaust manifold/catalytic converter assembly.

Figure B is the ex exhaust manifold

Since your car is originally equipped with the lx/dx one, in order to use the ex manifold, you'd need to buy a downpipe and B pipe, and extend your o2 sensor wires. Refer to my diagram below illustrating the differences

TL;DR not quite interchangeable. Conversion can be done

Ive seen YouTube vids were they make a bung hole with the torch for the o2 sensor. They also weld a lug nut to screw the sensor on.

Re: header/manifold question

This is my set up. 4-1 ceramic DC SPORTS HEADER. I have an EX so I didn't need to worry about the O2 sensors they are further down on the j-pipe.

Re: header/manifold question

Also, back to OP, yeah, your car will throw a P0420 code for no cat, unless you go with an O2 simulator.

Re: header/manifold question

alright good to know , ill probably just go with oem part, seems cheaper than switching to ex exhaust

Very true, I forgot that. Will a test pipe help clearing that code?

Re: header/manifold question

so could i just get new headers and downpipe , then cut and weld my existing bpipe , get the extension for my 02 and move it down , so basically total list would be headers, downpipe, o2 extension correct ?

test pipe will cause a code, since the downstream sensor won't be sensing any different readings than the upstream sensor.

Slight semantic correction to your post, D17 only has a single exhaust manifold, thus header. Again, just semantics. Basically, yeah, as long as you get the downpipe that mates with the ex exhaust mani and you get your B-pipe welded to fit properly, you should be good to go. Well, along with your aforementioned o2 sensor wiring extension.

Makes sense, thanks RiCeBoy!
