What is this engine part?

I have an 01 civic ex. It has 186k on it. Im wondering what this part is? Its below the egr, it has a sticker on it that says 12v. I circled it in red. The reason i ask is because theres a line running out of it thats not connected to anything, next to the blue arrow. The area right below that line is coated in oil or something of the sort.

Help is much appreciated.

Re: What is this engine part?

You may have circled the starter?

The "line" might be the transmission vent tube.

Re: What is this engine part?

Your right. I did some further research and then saw your reply. So what is this line you speak of? Transmission vent tube? Ill do some more research. Its emitting black crap all over the place

Re: What is this engine part?

Follow the "line" to its source. What's it connected to?

IF it's really the trans vent: The trans case has to have a vent near the top to allow for air pressure changes inside as the temperature changes. If there wasn't a vent, pressure would build up and try to escape at any available seals (the next weakest points).

Why would a vent be puking out fluid? IDK.
Is it a manual? Automatic?
Fluid level overfilled?
Overheated fluid?

-----

Is it really an engine oil leak that is coming from the round plug on the end of the cylinder head where a distributor would go if it had one?

Re: What is this engine part?

The line connects to, what i believe is, the starter solenoid. I cant seem to find any info about any lines that come from the solenoid.

The soot only covers the area under this hose. I saw how dirty it was under there one day, so i tried to find the source, and noticed it appeared to be coming from this hose that runs from the starter and just cuts off. I looked around it to see if maybe it just got disconnected from somewhere but i didnt see anything.

Its dark outside right now but ill try to squeeze the camera in there tomorrow and snap a few pics and launch a full scale investigation.

Re: What is this engine part?

I believe the starter motor may have a small vent tube of its own too.
Is it black carbon dust you are finding? Does it have starter issues?

Re: What is this engine part?

Well, the tube looks like a vent for the starter motor.
But it cannot leak oil. A starter has no oil to leak.

Your oily mess originated elsewhere. And that's a lot of mess.

Re: What is this engine part?

Indeed it is. Maybe ill take a couple hours and clean it all up, then when it leaks ill see where it starts from. Thanks for the insight my friend, ill update then.

Re: What is this engine part?

^ My guess is VC gasket, cam end plug, or both.
