Independent mechanics are hit or miss. 3000 miles ago mechanic said "it needed more than 4 quarts I provided". I am also at fault for learning after the fact that it takes 3.7 with filter. I noticed that it was a half inch above top dot (full mark) and thought maybe it would burn it or leak but it is still a half inch over months later. Mechanic also tried to extort me for crankshaft sensor because car would not start... Honda diagnosed $20 engine ground cable and have not had any issues since. Should I even waste my breath letting this mechanic know how disgusted I am with his incompetence? I will have a shop lift the car to drain and remove filter but will add the 3.7 quarts of oil myself from now on!

Car runs great at 158,000 miles no lights, leaks, or rattles but how much damage may have being a half inch over engine oil fill mark (when car is cold) done to this 1.7 D17A2 engine in 3,000 miles?

A half inch, (roughly a half quart)? Not great, but won't hurt. I see them overfull like that a lot, with no issues.

If it had a full 5 quarts or more, I might worry more. You don't want the oil level high enough to contact the rotating assembly---that causes foaming and loss of oil pressure.

You should paint a big 3.5 QT on the valve cover. Then add a little after they are done if you need to. At least it might not be way overfilled that way.

The dealer sounds like your best bet (competent). Get to know the rocket scientist and ask for him by name.

i would think a half inch on the dipstick is significantly more than half a quart.....i would say at least one full quart
