Question cylinder 2 misfire

I have CEL on car and code reads misfire in cylinder 2 change sparks plug and coil but i am somewhat confused because the mechanic changed i think cylinder 3 .....my question is how do you know which cylinder is number 2....what direction do you count? from outside lookin in the engine do you count from pasenger side to driver side or driver side to passenger side?

#1 is closest to the timing belt (driver side) and #4 is closest to the battery.
