2001 Civic LX Headlight Assembly Cover

Hi guys,

Long time lurker, first time poster. The forum was quite helpful to me when I was installing my head unit and speakers, and I'm hoping it can assist me again. You guys really seem to know your stuff.

After I installed my new headlights today, I noticed that the left one seemed . . . cloudier. After inspecting it, it seems that the problem is dirt and grime that has somehow gotten underneath the clear plastic cover that shields the lights. The right one is crystal clear, but I would really like to clean the inside of that clear plastic cover on the left if possible.

I have a repair manual, and it looks like I can remove the headlight assembly if I remove the bumper, but I'm not sure that will help me much. Since it seems that the cover is attached to the assembly, is there anyway to separate them, or am I out of luck and need to purchase a new assembly?

It looks like the cover is attached to the assembly by clips of some sort that I can see on the top, but I'm not really sure where to go from here. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Carefully pop the metal clips off with a flat head ( they like to fly so be careful). After that, heat your oven up to 225-250 degrees and put the housing in there about 6-7 minutes. At this point, you should be able to pull the lens apart from the housing. clean it up as you see fit and make sure it is very dry. Then reverse the process. Although you might want to pick up some extra black silicone at a parts store to ensure a good seal. But while its apart it's a good time to black the bezel if you so choose.

Is this fairly easy to do? Or. . . is it easy to break the headlight if you've never done it before?

Also, is it necessary to get the silicone to ensure the seal?

its pretty easy. just reseal them with the original goo inside. you can use a heatgun if you want but it takes longer than oven.
