D17 Cam Gear tuning
Hi guys, I am trying to get a little more power and get my car to run smoother and I have been tuning it with Aem Ems and lately I have been wondering if I should mess around with the adjustable cam gear....I searched old threads and I found one where gearbox claims he made more power retarding his car 1.5 degress. The reason I am nervous is because i have the crower stage 3 cam and many people say the valves can hit the piston easier. Any suggestions or past experiences would be appreciated. I have tried retarded it 1 degree already and it feels a little better all around actually.

You should be able to get it to run smoothly without adjusting the timing mechanically. That stage 3 cam will only idle so smoothly though, it's a big lobe cam, it will only get so quiet before you can't go any further.

Re: D17 Cam Gear tuning
yeah i know and understand that because of the big valve lift it will always have to idle higher and have funking sounding idle to some people but I am wondering if i can get more power outta of adjusting it and if the power is worth the risk if there are any risks.

If you are boosted, I honestly wouldn't even worry about it, just run the standard timing retard for your boost level. If not, you can play with it some, but timing can kill a motor quick if you dont' do it correctly. I'm talking melted spark plugs or pistons, nasty detonation, the list goes on.
