Help on exhaust

i recently bought a aem cold air intake system for my car anad now ima get and exhaust system. i was thinking about getting the greddy evo2, but then some guy told me to just change the muffler since the piping is the same size.. if i do that do i still get the same hp gain?? the greddy evo2 costs $500 and a race muffler i saw by megaflow was only about $60. so should i just get the mega flow and have it welded?

Re: Help on exhaust

from my experience man exhaust is well...exhaust.

regardless if you get the $500 system or just the $60 muffler, you are not going to notice a HUGE power gain. it's not going to snap your neck on shifts, or push you in the back of your seat. i had a full catback exhaust system on my civic...and don't get me wrong it had a lil bit pickup and go...but nothing noticeable.

after a while the sound eventually got annoying and long roadtrips to cool places felt longer than before. if you get the full catback (wider piping) your car might put out 5-7 more horsepower...MIGHT. every car reacts differently...different enviroments, conditions, engine life, etc.

if you get just the muffler you are still opening up your exhaust and removing your performance robbing exhaust bottlenecking muffler that came with the car so in theory again..you are getting horsepower out of it. probably 3-5 if you're lucky.

wether you go the route for hundreds or the route for 60 bucks you're getting power either way...and it's not really anything you're going to notice. i have no idea if what that guy says about the evo2 exhaust system is true or not by greddy, but if he is right then theoretically YES, you're saving some money if the piping does not change.

keeping your stock exhaust manifold + aftermarket muffler sounds the best imho. you keep that low grumbling idle when you start your car and it doesn't sound like 3 kids screaming in your back seat when you put the pedal down.

Re: Help on exhaust

^^ I agree,
I have an apexi n1 full cat back, and it is sometimes annoyingly loud... long journeys unless done at 60mph make your ears hurt.

The power gain in non existant.... 2hp tops honestly... but anyway my mate has an ebay exhaust which is a "copy" of mine N1, and tbh apart from weld quality the exhaust makes the same noise and looks the same. and the weld quality aint shabby it's just noticeable... if you get me.
Anyway, its up to you i'd do the cheapest route tbh its not like you'll get power gains its all about noise.

Re: Help on exhaust

I have a '97 Ex, SOHC D16Y8, Manual Trans. What should I get? I want like a somewhat loud, deep tone. I don't want it to sound like a "fart can." I guess that means non-ricey muffler, idk. But just a somewhat loud, deep tone, like if it could be heard from a few blocks away. I kind of like this one on this video, but if possible I'd like it deeper in tone. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvMK49s3u0U

-Thanks

Re: Help on exhaust

if you run a header i think twin loop systems sound the best.also most n1 style exhaust come with removable silencers to cut noise in have if you should choose so.

Re: Help on exhaust

i personally think apexi n1 exhaust systems sound good. out of all the videos on youtube they sound "tolerable".

ebay is a 50/50...you might win...you could lose and get the worst product ever. its always a gamble. if u dont have the money to cough up you can always try there. :/

Re: Help on exhaust

Yeah, no offence, but I really dont care for the Apexi for our car, its tooo loud for me. I did get the EVOII and it may have let the car roll through 3rd a lil faster, but its more for looks and sounds, it was worth every penny, it stays quiet for me in low revs and sounds really aggressive in the higher revs without sounding bad, just my .02$!!!

I agree, my N1 sounds pretty good, low rev's are just a low deep tone...were as high up is the nice civic rasp.

Only bad annoying thing is 70mph is about 3500 so that is border high rev's and well thats when motor way gets annoying.
Other then that i like it, it's not to noisy it adds the jap sound and it honestly looks rather good!

Re: Help on exhaust

shoot if you wanna get a clean sound go with tanabe exhaust systems. heard one of those on my boyz hatchback...low decibels for daily driving...but slamming on it and hitting vtec had that really clean aggressive tuned sound.

Re: Help on exhaust

I have had four different "catback" systems on my 2001 lx... Magnaflow, a weld on system from a shop, "Ebay special" and now a Greddy Spectrum Elite... The Greddy is by far the best system (with the largest price tag too). To me it has the best all around sound when your cruising its not annoying but when you accelerate it definitely sounds really tough... As far as performance goes it was a noticeable difference over the Magnaflow system...

do you have headers installed on your car? i had the hks hi power on mine too but once i installed my headers it was a completely new sound...real high pitched, raspy, well...ricey sound. i couldn't deal with it so i got a megan racing muffler to replace it and have loved the sound ever since. it's real deep, no rasp to it at all, smooth clean rumble even at higher rpm's.

i like the tanabe systems alot...but since i haven't found a kit for the lx yet (if there even is one) and the muffler itself is $200-300 dollars, don't think i'll be getting one
