Does oil filter brand matter?
Does oil filter brand matter?
Hey guys Im looking for your opinion. I work at a lube shop and we sell two different type of oil filters. We sell a generic brand one (Lube finer) and we also sell the OEM manufacturer oil filters that they use at the dealership. My friend that i work with said that the OEM ones are a waste of money. I'm not so sure people are pretty picky when it comes to oil filters. Anyways I'm wondering if its worth the extra couple bucks for the OEM Honda filter as opposed to just a generic one.

You could use your awesome noobish powers to search. Hell do a little research on your own and cut them open like this guy did.

um yeah there is a BIG difference between a $1 powerflo that filters maybe 94% and a $10 mobil1 that filters 99% lol. if you like your car, stick with K&N, mobil1, or napa gold. i wouldnt even use the oem filter for our cars, its just a trashy fram. if you are really on budget, it would prolly be okay to use the $5 purolator pureone filters which are around 98%. also many filters do not have anti drain back valves and other features so really you get what you pay for. dont complain if a cheapo filter ruins your engine later.

It may be made by Fram, but its still a higher quality than the regular Frams that you get off the shelves. And the Im pretty sure I read somewhere a while back that the Honda OEM oil filters are one of the best ones you can for the Civic.

honda uses two actually. a crappy fram and sometimes you get lucky and get a "good" one, if you call fram good lol.

Re: Does oil filter brand matter?
i remember reading an old thread where a mobil1 filter gasket burned on one side (after 3 months of normal use) and leaked almost all the oil out til the low oil pressure light came on.

I work in a tire lube express when a customer ask what filter is better, I put one in each hand there is a significant difference in weight. That is because the cheap filters dont have as much filter. So short term money gets you better long term results.

Re: Does oil filter brand matter?
i think 92-94% for cheap filter and 99% for expensive is a big difference, no? at least in the air filter world, thats the difference between trashing your engine. the fewer particles the oil filter catches means there is more junk going back to the delicate engine parts.
