Programming key remote for '09 Civic?

I'm planning on buying a new key from the dealership, but they're charging a lot to simply program it, even after the key is not cheap to begin with. I was wondering if there was a way that I could program it myself and how. I know it was possible with the 7th gens. I have a key that works, just getting a new one, so I can have that in the ignition for the programming process. Thanks in advance

Re: Programming key remote for '09 Civic?

We lost one of the black keys and was going to get a replacement from the dealer and found out it cost like $75 for the key and another $75 to program it so it is not cheap.

We decided just to go with only 1 black key and use the gray valet key as well.

A few weeks, later, we found the other black key in the closet.

Re: Programming key remote for '09 Civic?

I began the process of finding a transponder key blank and getting it programmed; but, I found my valet key before I took the last step and hid it on the outside of my car, inside a rear wheel well. It is inside a magnetic container and that is painted to match the car (blue) and it's wedged behind a piece of (very thin) sheet metal.

The blank keys can be found on-line at several Web sites and typically cost from $13 to $20. One example is http://hondaswap.com/auctions/2008-2...er-key-439900/ .

To get it cut and programmed, I found two sources - my Honda dealer (cost $30) or an independent lock and key service that has the necessary machine(s).

I hope this helps.
