I've read in the owners manual that the automatics can be shift like a manual; from 1, 2, D3, D. I've personally never done it because i was always skeptical it might screw up the transmission. I'm tempted to try, but i mean, would their be any damage?
I'm just curious to know if anyone else does this and does it feel like it's stressing out the transmission?

Should be fine, he is just manually shifting the gears instead of doing it automatically. Just dont redline it and downshift from high revs... or at all for that matter, just use the brakes, and it will be fine.

i figure upshifting shouldnt cause any problems unless you're doing hard acceleration / redline shifting, but downshifting seems like it'll be painful -- no way to rev match + the clutch mechanism doesnt work the same when your "stucK" in a gear. it'll go straight to engine braking instead of coasting so idk...

yeah i try not to do that. its better to shift to the proper gear before the car gets moving. like if you think you wont need 4th or you need more power, keep it in d3 but dont shift down to d3 once youre already going in 4th. its hard on the trans components. same goes for mashing the gas to downshift altho sometimes you have to.

yeah, i actually dont like auto-manual for the sole purpose of not having a clutch to make the shifts clean... (downshifts at least)
this is one of those times, i LOVE having a manual...
thanks for the help
