a stick mode for an auto?

yea i when i was looking at my auto shift a while back i was wondering what the d3 was for since my previous celica did not have this and neither did any of my family's other cars, so i looked in the manual and it said the 1-2-d3 and gear limitors...ie. if you have if shifted into '1' the car is locked into gear '1' and the same for '2' its locked into gear '2' or maybe it was 'up to 2' and the same for d3 (third gear) It also mention that the driver can use this to operate the tranny like a stick shift without a clutch pedal. now i really REALLY wanted a car with a steptronic shift system...freakin' rsx....but alas ourr civic does not have the ghetto paddel shift option. Is this the answer to my prayers? can i shift on small launches and strait? has any tried this? i did it once and i was just nervous from the loud rpm coming from the small car so i haven't done it since. i'm gonna try and read up on it some more and ask around to see if any has mastered the 'auto-stick' as i call it...

D3 will operate like a 3 gear AT. I use it all the time. When Im coming up to a light, I down shift to D3 for some engine braking. Occasionally I use 2nd as well. If I do, then I will shift back up from 1st. Its fun once in a while to run up to the redline and hear that baby whine.

so do u ease on the gas when ur shifting or is it like a sequential shift and just keep increasing gas? what i had in mid was keeping it in 1st, shifting to 2nd, and then d3 and then d to get a shift like approach

I don't understand what the big deal is with people complaining about stick being bad in traffic. Not to sound like a jerk, but once you're used to it it's pretty much automatic as in you feel like you're doing little effort to get the car moving. It's not even that hard to do things while driving a stick like answering your phone or changing the radio station etc. etc. once you get the timing down.

amen, its like, balance. you know to change the station in between shifts. not to sound like a jerk, but i think its quite comical that you guys "shift" your autos to getthe manual effect, i waited an extra month and a half to get a manual tranny, i wouldnt get anything but that. its a great feeling to rev up on an onramp.

Definately. You start feeling the 4 bangers power and get an amazing sound past 4,500 rpm.

When you drive 600+ miles per week...you do not drive a stick.
When you talk 5000 minutes per week for business...you do not drive a stick.
Manual trannys are fun for my toy car, not my daily driver.

Two solutions...

Bluetooth and an armrest

But seriously the 06 civic is the most effortless stick I ever drove.

Just be careful, there is a valve inside the transmission that will break if you put too much pressure on it. I once had a '93 Nissan with A/T. Put it in neutral, revved it, and dropped into '1'. Good news, impressed my friends with a 6 feet tire mark. Bad news, got totally humiliated when the car wouldn't go anymore... also I had to pay $300 for repairs which wasn't all that bad. It was an old car and that's why it suffered.
My point is, powershifting on an A/T is abuse to your tranny but won't kill it nor be evident until later on. Remember: Automatics aren't meant to be driven like Manuals (I'm not talking about tiptronic or variables).

Currently own a 2 week old LX with a StickShift.

If you take a bit to go through the actual manual (not the owners thingy they give you) you'll find that yes you can use it like a auto-manual.
1 - stays in first
2 - stays in second - nice for low traction takeoff
D3 - 1 thru 3 like a 3 speed auto
D - normal 5 speed auto
Have fun. and yes, high revs sound kinda cool in this car
