i havent seen or heard much about the 1.8l in the newer civics. i am looking at a 07 ex-l 5 speed with 7k miles on it i would use this car for 60 miles commute daily and am wondering about the reliability of the engine? also if its decent to build up a little bit?

Re: is the 1.8l in the 09 civic ex a good engine?

I have the 1.8 in my 4 door Civic EXL and have 22G's after 2 years of owning this car and haven't had any problems to speak of, just keep an eye on the oil levels and you should be OK. I'm getting about 29 MPG ( both City/freeway ) in Los Angeles driving. Hope that answer your ?

I think it is a great engine. For an econo car and 1.8 size- it makes good power ( tourque is good for it's size, but a bit low overall )
It is quick to rev and pull, and I get great milage with it.
it also runs on 87 octane - yet has somewhat high compression.

The auto tranny and electronic throttle are something to get used to.
the 8th gen auto tranny is not exactly geared for sporty driving.
Car is quick 60-80 miles but seems to feel lost 30-40 mile per hour.

youtube R18 honda engine - there is some tech stuff there.

From personal experience it is a decent engine. It is one of their better engines to date actually. Long from those days of yore that had the 1.5s and 1.6s. It is punchier, revs nicely, and a complete overhaul from past engines.

Now, if you're looking for reliability, of course Honda has longevity. And the mileage isn't bad either. I get anywhere from 26-32mpg, very similar to what the EPA has established for it.
