Manual Transmission Speeds

Here's how fast our cars are going at a given RPM
For the manual transmission only!

Can a mod sticky this to help alleviate the weekly question...

You don't have drag factored in... so its a couple MPH off in every gear... we don't drive in a vacuum.

Enigine RPM and wheel RPM are linked. As the engine spins faster so do the wheels and vice versa. If wind resistance slows the car down then the engine slows a proportional amount depending on the actual gear ratio. Unless the clutch was slipping (and it would'nt under a wind resistance situation), your statement is incorrect.

Then explain why the car doesn't do 125 in 4th... it only does about 110. Assuming what you claim the car should do, roughly 170MPH redlining 5th... but it doesn't, we all know it will barely do 130 with the wind behind you... The Civic Type R only makes it to 146 and there's no limiter, and it's got 73 more horse... Care to explain how that works if drag has no factor in this?

I think he's stating the maximum speeds possible in each gear period, wind does not factor in when u're just talking about how fast the wheel will spin at a given gear at redline. You might not make it there on stock, but if you boosted it but didn't change the tranny, those would be your max speeds in each gear.

The rotational speed and the rotational speed of the tires ARE linked with a fixed ratio. Let's use a 1:1 ratio. The motor would rotate one revolution and so would the wheel. Let's hypothetically say that the wheel circumferance was three feet. For every revolution the car would move forward three feet. Now double the rotations and you double the speed of the car. The numbers that I used are FICTIONAL but the idea behind them is very simple mechanics. Spin the engine one revolution and you will get a FIXED amount of wheel revolutions depending on the actual gear ratio.

Wind resistance becomes a factor when you are talking about the maximum speed attainable by a given vehicle. Based on a vehicle's coefficient of drag, it takes a certain amount of horsepower to move through the air at a given speed. The faster you go - the more power it takes to push through the air. This number increases exponentially. That means that you can't just double the horsepower and expect twice the top speed. It becomes the law of diminishing returns.

It's a chart showing the speed you will be traveling at a given RPM in a given gear. It says nothing about a max speed. I posed this so people don't keep posting "How high does 3rd gear top out at". It can also be used as a comparison between the different cars transmissions. I know for a fact that the HX gearing is accurate because I own one, and have gotten up to 105 in 3rd gear. As far as the other gears, I have no proof, but the math is solid, and the gear ratios are the correct ones for our cars.

Drag only is a factor when determing the max speed of our cars, since I don't have the time to figure out the wind resistance and all that... that will have to wait till the summer.

The file is an Excell Spreadsheet. I had to zip it because of the 50k filesize limit.
