install OEM fog

how hard is to install OEM fog, i means connecting wires from engine bay to the switchboard thing.... i heard lot of people their fog light lens is crack up, so its replaceable or no?

what do u think of Piaa 002x, its small that fit perfect, no need to cut plastic at all (according to member in here), is piaa lens could be stronger than OEM one?

thanks,

yeah, i heard they do crack easily, and they're expensive to replace. there was a really good DIY (w/ LOTS of pics) on the site here for the OEM fogs. should be able to find it with a search.

I had a a pair of fog lights. They lasted me about 8 months before a rock broke the lens. It looked crappy with only one working, so I took them off. Now I was looking at the OEM Fog lights, but didn't realize they cracked easily. Good to know. I think I'll just forget the fog lights. Unlees, IF YOU HAVE A GRILL AND PUT THEM BEHIND A GRILL, ARE THEY VISIBLE? I SAW SOMEONE DO THIS, BUT WASN'T SURE HOW PRACTICAL IT WAS.

If you want them to look factory, I suggest the oem replica fogs from tornactive. I got some recently and they are good quality and easy to install. Click my DIY below for more details. They're only about $105, so replacing them wouldn't be too expensive if you had to buy new ones.

I've been looking into some kind of vinyl film or something to go over the glass to keep rocks from breaking them, but I haven't found anything usable yet. I was thinking about the material like Valvoline uses for those window stickers when you get your oil changed there...static vinyl or something. If anyone knows where to get a transparent sheet of this stuff, let me know and I'll try it out.

Well, I'm not sure if it will work, but there is this stuff that is put on windows so that they cannot be broken. It is a film that goes on like tint and will stop a sledge hammer from penatrating the window. The window still breaks, but stays together. Try looking in the local yellow pages under window tint for homes. Most places should carry it or know where to get it. Sorry, but I dont remember the name of it but if I remember I will post it.

Hope this helps.

Yeah. No need to remove the bumper. You just make a hole for them and they wrap around and attach with screws. It also gives you access to the horn on the drivers side, in case you want to upgrade that while you're at it.

You also don't have to splice any wires around the lights for them to come on with parking lights or headlights like aftermarket lights do. They plug directly into the fusebox and get the signal from there. And they DO come on with the parking lights, headlights and even when the brights are on....like it should be.

I know a place that sells sheets of headlight protectors that you could cut to fit on the fogs. It is made by 3M and it is about 5mm thick. Really strong adheasive too. I have a set on my Euro spec headlights on my Jetta. It keeps the little chips and crap off too.

I did a little searching and found something called Blue Ion Headlight Film. $12.95 + $4.50 s&h for a sheet of 22x8inch.
"Transform your car into a hot driving machine. Blue Ion Headlight Film from Zealous. After you put this blue ion headlight film onto your car, when you turn on your headlight, the light come out with have a little blue tinted color."

Found the Rock-it Headlight Protection Film $15.00 for a large 11" x 13" sheet
$58.00 for a SUPER large 11" x 52" sheet.

I found this interesting link that has lens paint, trim paint, and caliper paint.

Still looking for more alternatives....

Found some on eBay here.

whoo wee. So I just spent the last 5 hours installing my fogs. I know most people spend like 1 to 1.5, but I was doing this myself.

Some advice for those that ocme after me.

1) Use a dremal to cut the plastic. Box Cutter works fine but I slipped twice and scratch teh lower bumper.

2) Those self tapping screws dont' self tap. Use a drill and make some holes for the screw.

3) The rubber grommet on the passenger side is completely sealed. Cut it with a xacto knife. Run a string through, tie it to the connector and pull it through. I couldn't get the conenct to fit through the grommet so I just cut off the connector and spliced it back on later.

Oh man..so tired. I'll write up my own DIY...soon. with pics.

I found it on one of the VW sites. It is at Parts4vws

Here is a direct link http://www.parts4vws.com/catalog/pro...artNumber=8X22 It's $35 for two 8x22 sheets or 6x24.

The colored film will kind of defeat the purpose of fog lights. The best color to use for fogs is yellow b/c it cuts throught the fog, rain, snow, etc. a lot better than white light. It is a lot more expensinve too.

Well, i checked all the local auto parts places and nobody knew WTF I was talking about. Typical. So I'm gonna order some online and try it out soon. I'll post some pics on it too.

One good thing came out of the search though. I found a new performance shop thats only 10 min from my house! Oh... the temptations!! The guy has Royal Purple oil too...very expensive stuff at over $7 a quart.

cuz human eyes are more sensitive to yellow, that's why street lights are yellowish.
