Complete Noob: Help with keyless entry please

Hi all, just bought myself an 01 civic 4dr lx. I want to put in a keyless entry system and was looking at the kit made by autopage, http://www.autopageusa.com/autopageusarf1055ke.htm. My local shop wants $125 to put it in even though the part only costs $40. I want to save some money but have never done any type of car install before. I am pretty mechanically inclined..just need some good directions. Has anyone done this type of install before. Also, I was debating whether or not to just buy the honda keyless..cause it is also cost $120 and I think it just plugs in. Let me know. Thanks.

i bought and installed my own alarm system with keyless entry. That was my first "mod". As long as you know the wiring, it's not that hard. Just make sure that you put your alarm "brain" somewhere not readily available to a potential thief (like somewhere deep behind the dash). Also try not to be too stingy when buying your alarm. $40 is a little on the cheap side so watch out for quality. Don't buy the honda keyless. I personally don't have any experience with them but most people on this site swear they are pieces of crap.

If you do decide to install your alarm yourself this site should help you out a bit.

The honda alarm and keyless entry plugs right in while aftermarket alarms require cutting wires and such. I would go with factory alarm but aftermarket alarms give you more options so it's really your own preference. I wouldn't install an aftermarket alarm yourself, especially if you're a "complete noob".

I really wasn't planning on the alarm system cause I live in upstate and car thefts are a rare occurence. I just wanted keyless entry cause my car is black and at night i can't see the lock and I don't want to key my car by accident. I don't have a problem cutting wires, but am wary about hard wiring anything in. Do people solder it in or just crip and connect?

Seriously though, I've been looking for a DIY for ages. Everyone has wire diagrams. No one has actual pictures. Someone help me out as I would really much rather do the install myself.

Same here, I just got my Clifford Matrix professionally installed (by my cousin ). He did it for free so I never touched it, don't know s**t bout alarm wiring. Some DIY on this site need a little more info.

If a wiring diagram and the instructions that come with your alarm/ keyless aren't enough to figure out how to do it, you should pay somebody who does know how to. What wire would you be cutting to install keyless??? The only wire that is ever cut in an alarm install is the starter wire. And you always, ALWAYS solder an alarm in. And even if you do have a diagram, you still must test every wire with a multimeter before making your connections.
