help please

I was getting ready to get my head port and polished. Along with cam and throttle body work as well. I was talking to a guy at the shop I was going to have the work done at. He asked what I wanted to see after it was done. I said around 140-150 wheel hp. He said that might not happen, suggested I go turbo. The above mentioned work would be around $1300 and the custom turbo $3500-4000. Is he trying to screw me or just telling the truth. He also said that the head work and cam might not go well with the turbo. So true or not? If I go turbo what kind of hp will I see, and do I need to build the engine at all? Thanks guys. hes telling the truth about you not seeing the 140 to 150 wheel horsepower with just the engine work. You can run a turbo at 8psi on the stock internals, but not much more than that. I don't see why the cam and head work wouldn't go well with a turbo, especially if you told him you were gonna turbo it eventually

What kind of throttle body work? Bigger bore? That's going to give you more flow, but maybe only 3 to 4 more horsepower. Well, maybe a little more if you're running forced induction. The head porting and polishing will give you moderate gains. Maybe another 6 - 8 horsepower gain. I hear that our intake manifolds are really restrictive, so porting them is kinda pointless. Although I've never seen a dyno after a P&P on a D17, so it's just hearsay. The only way you're going to get betwean 140 and 150 horsepower is if you raise the compression. That means that they need to take off a little material from the bottom of the head. That's what the concept civic had done (along with a P&P and a bigger exhaust) to get 170hp.

A custom turbo for $3,500 - $4,000 installed is a good deal. Depends on what you get though. if it's just bare bones then it sucks. If it's got everything and it boosts your power to about 200hp, then it's the bomb. A P&P will be good for a turbo. Same with the throttle body work. Raising the compression is not good for the turbo. A new cam might or might not be good for a turbo, but generally if it makes more power when the car is NA then it'll make more power when you go FI. Although a cam that's optimized for NA and used in a turbo setup will not be as good as one optimized for a turbo setup. I'm not sure exactly what the deal is, but I think turbo's like cams with bigger duration.
