clearing headlights dot sae?
i was wondering if the stock headlights are still legal if you take out the little clear pointy piece under the turn signal or if you have to atleast leave that in after clearing the headlights to still have them legal. also what chrome paint sohuld i use to repaint the chrome insert since i got silicone on it and while getting it off i took off seom chrome. and how do i repaint it once i get the paint.
Once you clear the headlights they are illegal no matter what. Without an orange reflector on the front/side of your car it is illegal. You could put a small reflector on the bumper to make it legal, theoretically (I think the minimum legal size of the reflector is 2 square inches, don't quote me on it)

if ur talkin about the reflector...takin it out would be illegal because there has to be reflectors on the front and rear of the car. for the chrome that u rubbed off...714-956-HONDA!! or just paint it black
listen, save the drama from ya momma and clear your headlights if you want to. Just put in some amber turn signal bulbs from Pep Boys: retail price about 4.99, that should allow you to maximize your pimpage in your Civic and all you to drive without being harrassed by the "Poe Poe"
As far as I know, yes you must have an orange reflector in the front of your car. Nytejade, could you name some cars that don't have an OEM orange reflector in front? I think the confusion comes from the orange piece that you remove. The orange piece covers both the turn signal and the reflector. It is legal to have white/clear turn signals as long as the reflector is orange. I know someone posted a DIY on the site for painting just the reflector orange. To the best of my knowledge, these are the federal/DOT standards for front turn signals....
EDIT: Note that the DOT/SAE TYC projector lights do have an orange reflector.

Humm yeah it is illegal to have cleared headlights if you don't have a orange reflector on the front of your ride. But I have seen some Chevy trucks being sold off lots with clear corners with no orange reflector brand new too. But if a cop wants to pull you over for that he is super bored. I say just do it and put a orange bulb in there if you are worried no problems

here in VA, it is required to have an amber reflector AND blinker. but as long as you have one or the other cops should leave you alone. just have it ready for inspection by slapping on temporary orange reflectors if you need to. here's how I worked around the law

I still have the clear blinker bulbs, but with my 4300k headlights the turnsignals look amber

You could paint that little reflector in there with orange glass paint. I believe it was Mex that did that and it turned out pretty cool. As for getting the chrome back? I would like to know too, because I did the same thing
here, check out this post...MEX'S CUSTOM HEADLIGHTS
I used a spray, and if you want the information for the spray, let me know. PM and I'll get back to you. I only did it on a practice headlight, have not had the courage to rip my headlights apart yet. But the reflector turned out pretty cool. So, if you want the information on the spray that I used, or pics of my headlight, PM me.
Later.

It depends on where you live. The Texas DOT website states :
Turn signal lamp mounting. The lamps showing to the front shall be mounted on the same level and as widely spaced laterally as practicable and, when signalling, shall emit a white or amber light or any shade of light between white and amber.

The beetle has sidemarkers which makes it okay for there not to be any orange reflector in the headlight.

Ah ha, well someone said it's illegal NOT to have any orange reflectors in the headlights. No one said anything about side markers. That's why alot of new cars don't have them in the headlights, cause they have orange side markers. That's what nobody mentioned. So you can have NO orange reflectors in your headlights.
Yeah I have never lived in a state where they have inspections. Neither AZ or OR have them. I just wait for the renewal for my plates to come in the mail and I just send a check and I am ready to go for a few more years when I get my stickers. Yeah my old 88 civic it had clear corners and they didn't even have a reflector in them, kind of the euro clear corner look you could say. Never got pulled over for them even when I had all Hyper white turn signals so it all depends.
But Mex does have the best alternative if you need orange on the front

Thanks for backin me up Flyriceracer!!!
I never said it had to be in the light!!! We all mentioned you can stick one on from the local autostore!! As long as there is some type of orange reflector (in the headlight, turn signal, bumper marker, etc) then the car is legal. If you don't then it is illegal. You know that Integras has orange turn lights on the bottom and they sell clear ones you can replace it with. If you do that then you are removing the orange reflector.
orange and legal
clear (though it has an orange turn signal) and ILLEGAL
It is legal in most states to have an amber OR white turn signal!! Like I said, it most likely will not be picked up by normal city/county cops but if you have traffic police like we do in Baltimore, then they will pick it up if they see u! good thing I don't drive on the highways much!
