I / H / E

Jst bought a new 2k3 honda civic si coupe(Ex in the states) and i wana put some more pep into it's 1.7L sohc vtec.. im not too technical when it comes to this stuff. Since theres no turbo / sc available for 7th gens yet, i figured the way to go is i/h/e... My question is, is it worth it to spend the money on these things? I've heard various opinions.. like they are nothing but noise makers and give squat as far as power.. but there are others who tell me i can get some gain. I was thinking AEM cai, dc sports ceramic 421 headers, and a full cat back however not sure yet which one. I dont want anything too loud at all.. just a smooth deep sound.. Anyway.. any opinions or advice would be much appreciated.. and also, aprox how much hp gain will i see with these parts.. thinking the tests on aem's website and stuff are garbage.. thanks

Btw, this is my first post, new to the site

Just live by the motto: If you want power, a Civic isn't the car for you.

If you want your exhaust to be quite, check out the Brand Magnaflow. Great product, and is not loud at all.

Actually if you're willing to spend a lil' more money, quit depending on the aftermarket so much and do some custom work and research more about why the engine is such a ***** to get little power out of with an i/h/e... THEN you can have the power you want.

Out of intakes headers and exhausts, the only good bolt on for the EX is the HP header with high flow catalytic converter. It works because it replaces the existing cat converter. An aftermarket exhaust system may do a lil' more for it. Any will do. All intakes act nearly the same, it's just a matter of getting a cold air or a short ram.

Presonally the combo I would recomend is the AEM CAI, HP Race Header (if you don't feel like going through the pain of the install then just get HP's top section), and just about any pre built cat back exhaust. Stay away from custom piping, it sucks. If you are not expecting HUGE gains from this, you won't be dissapointed.

i have ihe with a couple other mods, and i noticed this: on flat dry roads at night i give it a little throttle to about 3-3.5k rpm (1st gear). then quickly take the foot off the gas for a moment then mash the pedal to the floor. the wheels spin all the way through the rest of 1st gear. anyone else notice this?

replacing the intake manifold, and getting I/H/E will give you a fair bit of gains.. in the 20-25HP range...the biggest reason our cars don't respond well to mods is because of the OEM intake manifold...it does not flow very well. because of it's shape and design. It's designed purely for emmissions and fuel conservation. Not power. In the upper RPMS when the engine is really pulling alot of air, the intake manifold becomes a restrictor...

Well, I believe you... if you add the fact that our stock catalytic converter restricts air flow as well, then I guess you could say that there's no more question to why our engines are stubborn by most bolt-ons. These are the problems and these are the solutions:

1. New intake manifold
2. Replace stock cat converter with a "high flow cat" or a straight pipe.

I would really like to see how a new manifold would work with an aftermarket intake, header with high flow cat/straight pipe, and exhausts. It would also nice to see the aftermarket make an intake manifold for our cars - if only we could get them to do it. I know our cars aren't performance oriented as it is but we don't wanna stick with these ristrictions.
