Why Synthetic Is Good.........
Hey everyone, just thought I would share some insight with you. My step father is a petrolium engineer and he told me that synthetic was good for our cars. Now I know you all are saying, "well we know that already," but you need to start early when using it, like around 10,000 miles or less. The reason why is when your car uses premium oil and not synthetic, there is carbon build up in your engine around the piston rings. Your engine gets used to the carbon based oil when you use it for a while. If you start using synthetic too late, not sure how long that is, then the synthetic will pretty much get rid of all that carbon, which in the process, will make black smoke come from your exhaust, and in general, switching to synthetic too late is not too good for your engine. Just thought I would let you all know what the professionals say!
That's mostly a myth.
The theory behind it is...synthetic which is more "slippery", will manage to leak past old piston rings and into the combustion chamber...thus causing the black smoke. That's the same reason that if your old clunker starts burning oil you could try switching to a heavier weight to stop the problem. Today's oils (dino and synthetic), however, contain detergents that minimize the build-up of sludge inside the engine. So if you change your oil every 3K miles, you should be able to switch to sythetic without problem at 100K. I switch my previous cars oil to synthetic at 128K and it never burned a drop. I even used a motor flush which is supposed to clean out any sludge in the engine.

Sythetic is best, but dino is more than adequate. The motor oil debate is never ending. 5w30 will protect better than 5w20, bust at the cost of fuel economy. Sythetic will protect better than dino, but at the cost of expense. Blah blah blah.
If you want your motor to last to 300K use sythetic and a Mobil 1 oil filter with change intervals of 3K. If you're happy with your motor lasting to 200K use the cheapest detergent dino you can find with the $2 filter from WalMart...but still change it after 3K.
