AEM cam gear,BAD NEWS!!!
I just installed the AEM cam gear, man am i pissed off now. It wasnt too hard to install, just some bolts were hard to get to and such. Anyways I go to start my car and it barely starts. It finally starts and then it is running really loud like a lawn mower. And the idle is really low, I let it warm up and not much happens, I look at the engine and it is shaking really hard. I shut it off quickly, and checked everything to make sure it was tight. The engine was REALLY hot already and it had already ran like 1 minute. I can smell fuel really bad too... Now I decide to turn it on again, won't start at all, then it backfires, It scared the crrap outta me. I finally got it where it seemed like it idled OK so i took it for a test run, what a mistake, the car wouldnt go over 2000 rpms, and it ran like crap, people in the neighborhood were all looking at me like WTF? Anyways it died out like 3 times just down the street and back, now i get home and parked it. i don't know what I'm gunna do. i just spent 3 hours putting it on, and I left the timing set at 0 at first before I even messed with it. I guess this wasn't the mod for me, just to let you guys know this mod is not for anyone. I don't know what I did wrong but obviously somehting is seriosuly wrong. Hopefully if I put my old gear back on it will go back to normal, i just gotta let it cool down because its hot as hell. I figure lets get a discussion going here real quick....

I AM SO STUPID!!!!! I just thought that i forgot something, there is a sensor down by the cam gear well I forgot to connect that back up, I feel like an idiot, either way dont forget to hook that back up, it sounds much better now I am going for a spin, I will post in a few minutes. Also don't drop any screws in the engine when you have it apart!!!

Here is a photo or my car and some photos of the cam gear.... I am going to try to advance the timing about 2 degrees next this is so fun!!!! When I took it for the cruise I seemed a little peppier, It might just be in my head. I went past the same people that were lookin at me before, I got on it hard, and it barked second pretty good, i was like damn... usually it'll just chirp them but this was like a bark... It looks pretty cool under the engine area....
It was easy to install basically, take out the spark plug coils and plugs, take the valve cover off, just look for the screws, then pull the timing cover off, what I did next was a used a marker and marked a mark and the belt and on the old gear, then I made the same mark in the same place on the new gear, this helped me line it up in the right spot without having to worry about TDC, anyways it all lined up perfect, it was kinda hard to get the belt back on, also you have to use the old woodruff key, its a round piece that holds the gear in place. Just make sure you have a lot of difference size sockets because some spots are hard to get into.... I left the timing cover off to show off the new gear...

i would highly suggest taking it to a dyno specialist to get it tuned, you're not gonna be able to tune it right just by feel. otherwise, good job, except about forgetting to hook the wire up.

I've got too many mods to list, check out "my ride" anyways, i should take it to a dyno, I just wanted to get it installed for now. It seems I got a little gains but its hard to tell without actual numbers. I'm about to go to work which is like 30 miles and I havent driven that far withit yet so we'll see how everything goes on the way.... It was pretty tight in that area to work with, the only wire I disconnected was the sensor that I forgot to hook up, doh! my friend said it could be the knock sensor and thats why it ran like crap. If you find someone with small hands to help out it would be easier, and just have a lot of tools!!!

OK I've had it on for like 2 days, still have it set to 0, Havent really notcied too much yet. I think I'm gunna have to wait and dyno. I might advance the timing 2 degrees but its hard to feel a gain unless you can see numbers. My check engine light was on when I first installed it but I think that was because I forgot to attach that sensor, doh! Well either way the gear is on now and one less mod to worry about later, I'll post what happens if there is any more news....
hey IDQ, as far as i know, no matter wut, if you have intake and exhaust... you're supposed to advance 2 degrees. i think you'll notice it, but then again, our engines are a lil wierd, so i could be wrong. but yah, that would be great if you could get that sucker on a dyno and see if the gains make this purchase worth while?!

OK i'm gunna try to advance it tonight and post what happens, I just wanted to run it for a few days to see how it works. I guess since we don't have a distrubutor it makes things easier because we don't have to check the ignition timing. I'll post what happens.....

OK all, I just advanced the timing on my new gear like 2 degress. it only takes 5 minutes to adjust. basically, I turned the igntion over just enough to not start it, and kept checking where the scale on the gear was until it was near the top making it easier to read. Just loosen the 3 bolts (5/16") and used 12mm wrench to turn the cam. I turned it one notch beacuse one notch=2 degrees. I tightened everything back up, and fired it up and took it for a spin. It seemed like when I shifted and the RPM's dropped the engine didnt bog down as much. It has more repsosiveness at lower RPM's too. It wasn't as jerky either like right after I shift. I wonder if I advace it just a tad more if I could notice more. Its gunna be hard to tell exactly if its making any power for me without a dyno. Another thing is my car runs the best when its cooler so its been so hot lately, its kinda hard to tell depending on the weather some days my car runs a lot better. it'll be nice when some other people on here get the cam gear and we get another opinion on it. For 135$ its a a decent mod.... I got mine at L=http://www.optauto.com]http://www.optauto.com[/L] If anyone needs help installing it just shoot me an email or something.
Its a celebration bitches!

Allright, i've come to the conclusion that it works best in my setup retarding it 2-3 degrees, i've tried it back and forth advacing and retarding it several times now and I get the best all around acceleration rearding it. It seems like it smooths out the acceleration curve and it doesnt jerk like sometimes when it was advanced. I'm gunna leave it retarded until I can get it dynoed for max performance.
generally retarding will give you better low end power but you will suffer in the top end. opposite for advancing not so great in the low rpm but more top end power. just a little info. if you get it dynoed check this out and see what happens and let us know. good job
and here is a case for your trouble.

Actually you got it backwards man, on SOHC engines retarding helps high end while advancein helps low end, thats why I retarded it beacuse I use my high end more.... there have been many articles on this, one is at importtuner's website, its called "cam gears explained." here is the link:
