I think Honda switched over to 5w20 due to tighter machining tolerances, but I have over 40K miles on mine and I use a 5w30 synthetic, with results ranging from a smoother engine, to better gas mileage (slightly). Remember though that the 5 in the number referrs to its cold properties, like it will flow like a 5 weight when it is cold. The higher the number, the less it will want to flow in cold conditions, so a 10w30 might take a little longer to start flowing. Starting the engine is the worst damage for it, so having the oil take longer to get there IMO isn't worth it. In hot weather or when the engine is warmed up, you're not worried about the 5 or 10, now you're worrying about the higher number in the viscosity rating. Change the 20 to a 30 maybe, but keep the 5.

I use a 5W-30 in the summer and 10W-30 in the winter. I live in bumfuk Washington so it gets pretty cold. I wouldn't recommend using anything above 10w-30 unless you want your engine to last less than it should. And don't use 5w-20 like Honda recommends, it's too light and won't lubricate as it should. The reason they recommend it and put it in your engine to begin with has to do with stats that as a company it helps lower initially. Peace.

The reason they use 5w20 is because of the tight clearances. 30 weight does not lubricate as well as the 20 weight will because it will not get into those tight places. They tell you what to use not what they recommend you use. You can void the warranty by using a different type of oil. They can find out by investigating. The residue is different and the carbon pile will be a lot different. And do not think I am Newbie. I just wish I had all that time to browse the web as most of you do. ~ASWZero

thats interesting but i dont believe honda would go thru the trouble of a carbon pile, unless it was a lawsuit in court and they really wanted out of your warranty. But thats interesting about leaving residue should have thought of that. Tony
