but think of the looks, and the points you get at shows. i think it's a good idea, cause how often are you changing stuff at all under your hood? if it's that much of a hassle, just take the hood off, right? easier to do since the hinges would be in front. about adding weight, just make it a CF suicide hood and you'll break even in the weight department. don't know how to do it, but good luck with it!
ok, first buy the hood off my 82 honda accord hatchback, then get ready to be lauged at, cause its really ugly.
seriously tho, if you want to do this, you need to make sure that your hood can support itself from teh front.........Alright, i just got back from checking out my car. This should be a simple mod actually!
there are three bits of the process:
#1 hinges and hinge feasibility
#2 hinge install
#3 release latch work
Your stock hood is actually STRONGER in teh front than the back! so thats a non issue. your frame might not be where you will be mounting the hinges, so keep an eye out for warping, you might have to do some structural reinforcement to help support yoru hood.
the hinges I reccommend are standard door hinges, they are invinible from teh outside and if you have a perfectly lined up seam (like your door) the hood will open UP high enough so ther will be no interferrance from say your grill, or the frame, etc.
you will of course need to cut pieces of teh frame out where your uper grill is attatched and weld on mount points, etc.....
Holes will need to be drilled into teh structure of the hood, as well as slots but so you have acess to betwen teh frame/hood skin, you still need to get bolts/washers/nuts/string/ballons/partridge-in-a-pear-tree back there!
with the hinges bolted to the frame and to the hood, (you took care to make sure everything lines up, unlike the ricer here who took 2 minutes to install his trick trunk kit and now has a trunk that dont line up right ) you can see if the mount is strong enough to support the hood, if not, the reinforcements can go it (steel rod will work fine)
Now al teh remains are the latch, and the hood strut. strut is a piece of cake, after teh hood work you will be fearless doing this.
I assume you have an aftermarket intake in wich case there will be pleny of room to relocate the release up there. same process as the hinges, instead you will be working the release. this will be a REAL pain if you have a stock intake, there is no room up there! keep in mind that you will want to bolt this to metal, its mostly plastic up there, so double check what you are drilling into. the hod latch itself will be simple to cut out and reweld at teh top of teh hood, but also remember the hood release lever will need to be accessible too, that means cutting out some of that plastic which was getting in teh way of a mounting point earlier.
Id love to see someone do this, even if I personally thin kit will look ugly as sin! good luck!

I thought about that about 5 minutes after i hit reply
if you can hide the seam or make it look nice, the rest is a piece of cake. twice the hinges (4 total, 2 on each side), half the weight, much stronger mounting points.
I wouldnt do that with a stock hood, however. I have a mold of our hoods and will be attempting to make my own fibercarbon hood (still heavy, show only, and a fiberglass matrix) If you had something liek that, where it dodnt really matter if you cut the whole thing in half, then it would be worth attempting.
that said, you would have 2 problems:
#1 where do you put the latches? (would need two)
#2 How are you going to get either side to lock down at the same height?
If you can solve those two problems, I think you have a b a d a s s idea there, player1!

Well actually two guys in the car club that I am in have done both of these. They are both easy and feasable (with a able bodyshop.) Check out Perfectedimagescc.comlookie here They are our car Club Pres and vice pres. Jeff and Brian. Jeff has a 95 civic that I am sure that you have seen in SS or Import Tuner.. Brian's mirage has a full evo conversion, with some other added goodies. Take a gander...

Yes, we as a club take pride in our cars, but the best car should not be the president, it has a lot to do with the person. Brian (evo president) used BMW hinges to suicide his hood. The reason he did it was because after a local meet, he forgot to close his hood down completely, and he demolished his other one. And let me remind you, they both would have paid a pretty penny for the hoods, but they got sponsored. The shop that we use is awsome. Their website is not that great but here ya go. ultimate auto body every car but the orange accord, with the integra head and tail light conversion, and t-tops, is in Perfected Images.

Was browsing on though this when I had a though: "suicide doors" are ones that when opened, the inside of the door is facing the front of the car...hence the name "suicide' because they could be pushed open by the wind while driving if they were not properly locked. So with that logic would a suicide hood not be the ones that come stock...opening so the inside faces the front...
P.I. DROOLS!!!!!!!!! X-Rated RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL, trying to get pic of Jeffs car out there huh???? Go to my club, X-Rated Racing to see pics of nice cars. How about our Widebody 96 Accord w/ TL headlight and tailight conversion and our '00 SI widebody with RSX headlight and tailight conversion. Just to let you all know, X-rated and Perfected Images are "rival" clubs in ATL. We are all pretty good friends. The same body shop that did our widebodies did the yellow civic witht he split hood. Ulitmate Auto Boutique is the greatest place to get stuff done. Mine will be there sometime soon getting some custom stuff done. Thinking of even a widebody.
