Increase in Red Line
as i understand the thing that is hurting our cars the most is the Single Cam, older civic were able to rev to about 7 and a quarter while the 2001 and 2002 are a little under 7. i drove an S2000 and it had a 9 grand red line, which was nice. i know reving longer can create more power and lets u stay in gear longer. is there anyway to safely move our red line up....forged pistons and rods? would a new racing cam make it posible for higher revs? i really like reving out engines...a ninja motor cycle has a 12,000 red line. and indy cars are anywhere from 13 - 16. but those are a little different. just looking for some ideas.
I wouldn't do it(move redline up) unless the whole bottom end including crankshaft is rebuilt to handle it, ya really wanted to i'm sure it would work jus shorten engine life considerable jus my opinion i could be wrong
increasing the redline would require a whole new valvetrain including valves and stronger valve springs to prevent valve float at higher rpms. also a cam that will produce max output at higher revs. honda bottom ends are strong enough. my friend had a del sol single cam with a head and valves and springs and also a cam that reved to 9500
ELTsanwich, since you already have modded your intake and exhaust, you could get an ECU upgrade with remapped ignition and fuel curves, which would make the most of your mods. You can get an ECU upgrade from Jet Performance Products, as well as a VTEC controller.
A good friend of mine just did this and he has a 5-spd EX with the same i/h/e as you do. I drove his car after the ECU and VTEC controller were installed and there's definitely more power everywhere and you actually feel it in the lower rev range--I noticed a definite improvement from about 1500 rpm. The best part of this is that the engine now revs to 8200 and you also get some adjustability via the VTEC controller. Honda already made the valvetrain pretty stout so you should only need to change the valve springs and retainers for sustained high-rpm use.
Needless to say, I am now sure I will get this upgrade as well.
