Should Oil Drain Bolt Be Hard to Loosen?

I tried doing an oil change today, but the oil drain bolt was so tight I nearly stripped it. I eventually gave up and took it into a dealership to do an oil change for fear of making the problem worse. The dealership replaced the drain bolt also.

I used a wrench and couldn't budge it? Is that normal?

the first time I did an oil change it was definitely a lot harder to come off than it should be. Took like two hours to do. Once you put the plug back in it shouldn't be that hard. From the factory they just buzz them on with air wrenches which gives it way to much torque.

the first oil change is always the hardest being from the factory.....of all the new civics ive changed oil on, in the upper 100's......only 1 was very hard. it was actually cross threaded from the factory and the oil pan had to be replaced

Yep, mine too. The first time I took it to my mechanic for an oil change (I always use Honda filters that I bring with me) they spend 10min. just trying to unscrew the drain plug without stripping it. Honda has apparently hired some idiots with zero automotive knowldege to work in their Ohio plant. These idiots have no clue what torquing is and that is why many new Civics are coming out all screwed up.. They had put as much torque on that little drain plug as the lug nuts have on my wheels (80ft-lbs)!

ya someone was talking about how the dealership had torqued their bult so they couldn't get it off. They had to return to the dealerhip and get it fixed or something

Yea that was me

When i took it there the service manager took it back and said there was nothing wrong with it. Strangely the bolt was properly torqued and I got it off later that afternoon...

Yeah, I just did mine last night, second time I did it myself. I almost ripped the car off the jackstands, that is how tight that was on there!

everytime you change your oil make sure to replace the oil drain plug washer (works as a gasket) that seals properly so you don't have to torque it too hard when tightening it...same thing for tranny fluid (same washer)

i think its a scam anyway for the dealer to over tighten the bolt because they want you to come back.. not everyone has the tools to change their own oil.
