Idea... Wireless Sidemarkers
I'd love to get sidemarkers for my civic, but the fact that it's leased prevents me from drilling any holes I'm sure there's a bunch of you out there that would like 'em too, but are in the same position as me (or just don't want to drill a hole in your baby!)
Anyways, I was just brainstorming a bit and came up with this idea. I did some searching for parts, and it looks like this is VERY possible.
RF Digital carries a bunch of 300-900MHz parts... including a chip that has the receiver AND decoder integrated in to ONE small chip. it's only 36.7 x 16.2 x 4.6mm (1.4 x 0.6 x 0.2") (would fit perfectly inside an OEM sidemarker unit), consumes very little power, and all it would need is a relay, LED, and battery. the transmitter could be wired to the existing blinkers to send the on/off signal, so you wouldn't need any other switches/elaborate wiring inside the car.
the biggest problem with this setup would be the cost... the receiver unit is $40, so you're looking at probably close to ~$200 for the complete setup. how many people would pay that much for DIY sidemarkers? (i'm not saying that i'd be making them to sell; i'd just like to know how many of you would be interested in doing this (as a DIY project)... anyone with any electrical expertise?
