efficiency algorithm (tire size/mileage/odometer) help!!!
Help me choose a tire size
I've been playing around with the tire calculator and I need some clarification on what it means if a tire is X% faster... for example, I put in 195/60/15 as the new tire compared to the 185/65/15 of the stock EX, and the figure on the bottom ranked it as 1.05% faster. Is it truly faster? Doesn't my car have to exert 1.05% more energy to cover the loss of tire height?
I have a feeling that my odometer would be skewed if I had a lower profile tire. For example, I put in 195/55/15 as the new tire... it rated it as 4.2% faster... so what if I apply that to say 50,000 miles... 50,000 x 1.042 = 52,100. So I'm translating this as 2,100 extra miles on my odometer by having a lower profile tire... if the 2,100 extra miles were to be used in 30 months (2.5 years) that would be roughly 70 extra miles on my odometer per month... and in terms of gas, if the mpg was say 32, then an extra 70 miles per month would equate to 2.18 gallons more I'd have to pump in to cancel out the 4.2%
Tell me what you guys think....

I think it refers to your speedo.
If your 10% fast then your sppedometer would show 100 mph but you would really be going 110 mph.
It can happen because the outer diameter of the tire is different so the speedo doesn't really read the proper speed.

Arty, I think that you worry too much......
....If your that worried about it,.......just go w/ bigger diameter so that you actually fool your odometer and you are putting less miles on your car.....

naw, if I did that, then my sidewalls would be way more mushier than the 65's that are stock right now... the reason why I'm trying to figure this out is because I can't afford rims right now... IF I have to get tires, I was thinking of putting lower profile 15's to give me lower and harder sidewall... but at the cost of efficiency.... hmmmm...
If you put lower pro tires on your existing rims not only will you screw your speedo and odometer accuracy, but you'll end up with some fierce wheel gap.
My opinion is just save your money till u can afford some nice rims and rubber. (but thats just me.)
