Tint Question
Tint Question
When it comes to tint, does the percent refer to how dark it is or what (e.g. which is darker 5% or 15%)..I know i'm a moron, but i'm just wondering...think that's the next thing i'm gonna do, ONCE i get my freakin car back from the shop....grrr...over one week without a car now...thanks all
5% is the darkest. Well zero is, if there is such a thing. the percentage of the tint is how much light is actually let through. So 5% would let less light through, hence be darker than say 15% or worse yet 60% or whatever, which is really light. Get it?
just be careful if you get tint, if you get like 5% the cops arent too friendly. check ur state law.

With tint the "%" is how much light is allowed through the tint. So 5% is darker then 15%. 5% is considered to be limo tint, and is the lowest you can go. Myself I have 35% on the back 3 and am going to get 35% on the two front soon. Hope this helps.
Thanks...is 45 decent? if not how dark do you guys think i can get it before the cops start to care? 45 is the limit here in MN, supposedly, but i've seen a black VW w/ some seriously dark tint...asked the guy what percent it was and he said he didn't know....
Well you have to take your chances with tint. I have 20% all around and the limit here in PA is 35%. I havent been hassled yet and I've had it on for about 6 months. 45 is pretty light. So if you dont want to be hassled, go for the 45, its your safest bet. If you want to be a rebel, go darker!
that chart looks helpful civicboi but my a$$ cannot understand it. can you or someone else break it down for the state of FL. it says for windshield-AS1 which i don't undertstand and then F.SIDE and B.SIDE so i don't know how those two go with the windshield-AS1 thing.....dammit too many dooby snacks

TO BEGIN, the most important column on this chart is TYPE. there are three different types listed on this page. NET means that the net, or TOTAL, tint cannot exceed the values listed. EX Civics come with safety glass that is, I believe, 92% green tint. Therefore, when you tint, you are 8% darker than what you put on the windows. For example, if you put 20% on, you are at 12% NET. If it says FILM, that means that you can put film rated at the values in the rest of the table. E.G.- If F.SIDE says 20, you can put 20% on legally, no matter how dark your windows come from the factory. Finally, if it says VAGUE BE CAREFUL. This simply means that it is up to the discretion of the local police to decide if the tint is too dark. 20% would most likely result in a ticket in that case, and SURELY 5% would. Make sure you guys check this column if you're worried about being legal. The only way cops know how dark your windows are is with a TINT METER, and if it says 12% because you have 20% on your safety glass, guess what , YOU GET A TICKET!!! holes!!!
AS1 refers to a standard that is on your windshield. Although the civic does not display it like other vehicles. you will notice about 5 inches down on the sides of your windshield a dot that is extended out past the other dots. that is AS1! It is a standard that keeps the tint from blocking your vision. Look at other cars in teh parking lots. a lot of them say AS1 next to a dot or small line. FOR OTHERS, the 5 or 6" simply says that you can have a maximum of 5/6 inches of tint beginning at the top of your windshield. This keeps you front tinting the whole thing, which is stupid anyway.
MPV refers to trucks/vans/SUVS. Car obviouly refers to CARS, or in this case, OUR CIVICS.
As far as F.SIDE goes, that simply refers to FRONT DOOR, or the driver and passenger windows. In FLORIDA, 28% is the maximum level, which basically is designed to outlaw 20% tint, but allow for 35%.
Same follow for B.SIDE, or REAR DOOR/QUARTER WINDOW, in which 15% tint is legal on our CARS. Once again, this outlaw 5% tint, but allows for 20%.
Finally, REAR obviously refers to REAR WINDOW. 15% is legal in FLORIDA once again.
Based on these numbers, I'd recommend 20%. It would be illegal on the front doors, but in florida would probably not result in any troubles. If you WANT to be LEGAL, get 20% on the back window and rear windows/doors and 35% up front. I'd say you'll be fine with 20%, but don't QUOTE me on that on. I have 20% in OHIO and the law is 50% all around, so I'm much darker, and have never had any trouble.
Now, here's the chart again.

I just got 5% on all windows...what a b!tch @ night...but so sweet lookin...no probs with the coppers, but a few close calls where I had to power down the windows ...whatever you do, don't go with 2 different %'s, looks silly...IMO
Yeah I had 32% on the doors and 6% on the back 3 windows it was too light up front. So went to 22% on the front doors and still didn't have much privacy so they told me 13% and 6% there wasn't much difference. So now I have 6% all around the ride, awesome privacy but still watch for the po po's and roll those windows down or open the roof.

Grey, I don't believe that there are any laws regarding tint percentage above AS1, as that comes tinted from the factory on most cars for safety. I think Honda was just slacking on the civic. I don't think the cops would get on you about going as far as spray paint this area, as you could just say it came like that from teh facrtory. Just as long as you don't tint the whole windshield, you would be fine.
I really would advise not to tint your car in accordance to the laws in your state, i live in cali and have 15% all the way around, have never been hassled, and i love it. changes the entire look of the car. I have a black coupe, and if you got black go darrrkkkkk if you got any other color, anything will look good, check out pics on this site of different percentages, find out what you like, keep in mind anything darker than 25 or 30 percent will affect night time driving, but ****, it makes it more exciting

yea i think when i get my windows tinted im not going to go along with the state rules , and get advice at the shop and see what they say to do, but dont you only get a fix it ticket if you get a ticket for tints? so you pay to pay for it to be taken off then show the cops and thats it?

2% is actually the lowest I have 25% on my fronts and 5 % around the rear and I can say it helps save my interior and eyes but sometimes Its just to dark .. if there is such as thing at night to where you cannot see the lines on the road....

so did you only get that one ticket and no others? does it make your insurance go up or anything?
is there a big difference with the percentages some say they got 15 and you said you got 16 but isnt that also 16 on top of the 92 if you have an ex cause of the privacy glass or whatever

Damn im in the Bay Area too, cops have never done **** to me, ive had a couple close calls too, cops pull up right next to me and i forget to roll em down, but if your on top of your **** and roll your windows down, its all good man. 15% is ****in dark, even in sunlight you can barely see in, its perfect, in the sun you can see the outline of the driver, in the nighttime you cant see ****. CHANGEs the entire look of the car, for a silver car, you dont really need to go that dark, on black you have to go as dark if not darker than the car to make it stand out, but for silver, even a mild tint will stand out, my gf has 30% all the way around on her 99 coupe and it looks tight, at night you cant see in at all, but it doesnt impinge her driving. If your worried about night time ****, get 30, 15 sucks sometimes (reversing...) oh and dont get two different %'s, in mi opinion looks odd, shitttyyy
i got my sedan tinted 5% all the way around and at night i cant even see to back up out of a parking sapce. I have to roll the window down and stick my head out lol. Also if you are trying to turn onto a a road at night you have to roll the windows down to see if anyone is ccoming. It worth it, it looks tight.
