2001 civic LX issues (oil leak and p0740)

Hello,

I own a 2001 honda civic lx and have 2 issues with it. I have had a check engine light on for about a year now its error code p0740 . I tried to research it and it seems to be an issue with the transmission I took it to a transmission guy and he said he would have to replace the torque converter and it would be about 1000 dollars. I am pretty much going to ride it until it dies on me because he said rebuilding the tranny would be about the same price.

the other issue I have is a small oil leak on the left of the engine. It seems to be coming from a round black plastic thing... I found an image online and circled it... What is that thing? and how would I repair it?

any help would be greatly appreciated

Looks like you have to at least pull the rocker arm assembly and the cam off, which means taking off the belt too. Also, all those bolts have a specific torque and torque sequence. You seriously need a service manual, it will tell you step-by-step how to do this.
