Simple solution to shift boot hanging

When i upgraded my shift **** to an aftermarket model my shift boot just hung there looking all ghetto so I went out and got a stiff rubber bushing with an inside diameter about 3/4 the diameter of the shift rod. This rubber bushing also had a slightly tapered top so it fit under the plastic part of the shift boot perfectly.

Anyways, I took the **** off and the centre console out and forced this rubber bushing on the shift rod with a clockwise twisting motion. It was an extremely tight fit and was a struggle to put on but thats good 'cause it keeps the boot up and snug with the shift ****.

The result looks factory and that shift boot won't budge. Costs next to nothing too!

plastic part of the shift boot? So you kept the gray ring attached to the boot? I just took that out, as it did not match up (size and color wise) with my new ****. But that is a good idea, I might try that instead of my all ghetto electrical tape idea. I could most likely super glue part of the inside of the boot to the rubber brushing. That way the boot would end right there, right below the ****. Think triangle. Thanks for the suggestion dude.

I used electrical tape, too! I'm NOT satisfied.

I want you to take pictures of it if you don't mind so I can get a good look at your **** and what you used.

I call rubber bushings washers.

I didn't think to install the washer first and then the whole console on top of it though. I thought to buy a washer with a smaller inside diameter than the shaft of the shifter and a larger outside diameter than the inside diameter of the shift boot trim ring. That way I can adjust it from the outside. My sister bought a Razo shift **** and her shift boot is hanging, so I think I'll fix that for her soon.

I'm going to Home Depot, or maybe I'll try Lowell's. an HQ used to be located in my home town, but they got overrun by Home Depot. I don't know... Any large home improvement center should have it.

I should have took some pics. The bushing is about 1/2 inch long and medium stiff. If its too soft it won't work 'cause it'll still fall down when your hand is on it. The inside diameter of the bushing should be slightly smaller in diameter than the shifter shaft.

Just go to your local hardware store and pick one you thing is about right. Unscrew your ****, pull out the console and force the bushing onto the shaft with a twisting motion. Put the console back on and test fit with your ****. If the bushing is too low and the boot is hanging then take the console off and adjust it.

Pretty simple. For those that haven't taken their centre console apart it is very easy and instructions are in the Mega DIY.
