I need a K series crash course
So I think I've about had it with the B series platform for a while and have found myself looking to move on to bigger and better things namely the K series platforms. I'm between an RSX type s and the EP3. I've done some reading around forums and wikipedia about the differences between the different k20 platforms but I haven't found some answers to my specific questions so I thought I'd try here and see what happens.
I really want the EP3, but the engine sucks. 160 hp 7200 rpm. weak sauce kimosabe. The K20z is where it's at and maybe what head/cam combos work and wanted to see if anyone around the forum has messed around with the A3 and what has worked for different folks. Trying to stick to as much OEM as possible and DO NOT want to open the block. What I am aiming for is leaving the a3 bottom since, from my understanding, its pretty resilient. Instead I want to see if using another head and Skunk2 IM will allow me to rev safely to 8k and make power up there.
I'm pretty new to the K series.
Any help would be great, links to other forums etc.
thanks guys

for the most part, im pretty sure all the k20 blocks are the same. you can definately swap heads to the a2 or z1 or w/e you want. from what i hear, the rbc intake mani is pretty baller too.

i've heard that too but I've also heard of complications with the RBC manifold and the z3 head on an a3 block because of the tb. Maybe the ITR manifold would be better?
What I would like to do is take the **** 7200 rpm red line and 160 hp and move it closer to the type s 210hp @8000 mark

Re: I need a K series crash course
just buy the rsx type S unless your getting the ep3 for dirt cheap. You get a lot better starting platform. Basically a GSR vs LS motors. The k20a3 head is crap, its not even true i-vtec. Its vtec-e. If you want to buy a k20a2 or k20z3 head they still carry a pretty huge premium around $800-1000 on k20a.org
http://www.jdmuniverse.com/forums/ho...20a3-head.html
You can probably find more info in k20a.org.
notice on the A3 head that there are only two lobes on the intake camshaft. that's for the VTEC-E version the EP gets. the smaller lobe on the left is the under-2200 rpm lobe, in which only one intake valve is opened. the middle lobe operates the valves during the rest of the time. on the exhaust, there is no VTEC mechanism.
on the A2 head, you'll notice three lobes per cylinder on each side. the outside two lobes are the low lift/duration lobes, the middle larger lobe is the high lift/duration. both the intake and exhaust valves have VTEC.
i tihnk rocker arms, valve springs are diffirent...

Re: I need a K series crash course
I wanted the EP3 because of the hatchback. It is a lot more practical for my uses, the cargo room of a hatchback for example. I assumed the heads were interchangable and I don't mind spending 800-1000 for a good head. I wasn't sure how interchangable the components were if they were switchable like the b series parts.
My plan would be to take the 06+ si tranny with LSD mated to the k20a3 block and a k20a2 (type s right?) head.
I am slowly getting more information and finding out the a3 doesn't have oil squirters? that blows.
its looking more and more like doing an a2 head on an a3 block isn't looking that feasible. I'm still waiting to hear from someone who has a swap like this

well the rsx is a hatchback. the si is basically a 3 door (wagon maybe). however, you can definately swap the a2 head on to the a3 no problems. i see alot of people with the rbc im so i don't think theres too many problems with it.

Then yes there all pretty much interchangeable down to the pistons, rods, cams..etc, basically like a B-series.
They just respond a lot better to bolt ons then the B series did when you have the kpro with it.

Re: I need a K series crash course
gotcha. im prolly looking at a complete swap to be honest. the a3 crank blows, the a3 compression blows, the a3 head moderately blows, the a3 trans blows 1 gear too short. z1 swap is most likely in my price range.

the em2 has a really big trunk for such a small car. the em2 is probably the best chassis for handling too.
