I don't have all the details. . But it works with the cars computer system. That little green light that flashes on the dash right after you shut the car off it's the "immobilizer" system kicking in. When it's engaged the car wont start at all under any circumstances without having a key with the chip that sends the message to the system saying this is the key that is supposed to be used it's ok to start. That's all. From what I can tell it helps a lot with hot wiring, because it's the signal that tells the car it's ok to start. Without it the car simply wont start. . No matter what wires you try and touch together or what you try to do to get it to start it just wont. So I guess it's pretty coo. .

there is a way to get around it tho, the chip in each key printed that year is the same, so if the thief could figure how to rig the chip to his electric lockpic he might be able to do it, that or just wire the chip into the bypass circuit, but yeah it does help a ton with most car thieves (seems like most of them aren't real swift, i mean they usually get caught doin somethin other than stealing the car right?)

Here is how a transponder theft system works:

A transponder is a device which emits a frequency to a pick up unit. If you have a Mobile Speed Pass, you know what it is. Now, in order to deter theft, after all the Civic is on the top 10 list, you add a transponder to the key. The point is that it is idiot proof since everyone knows where to put the key.

When you put your key in the ignition, the pick up reads the transponder in the key. If it is the correct one, it allows the vehicle's ecu to run the car. A good thing to know because if you change your ecu you have to reprogram the key transponder system. It is a good system because it is hard to get around. A common thief will not have a spare ecu to steal your car. And there is no limit to how different the transponders are, plus you still need the right key. So if you simply made a Honda key like yours (without transponder or one that is not programmed) your car won't run. There is no single wire to bypass and all the control modules are inside your dash.

The bottom line is that it is much harder to steal your Civic. They can still grab a tow truck and hoist away, but the old days of simply pulling the ignition and driving away are going away. Remember the movie "Gone in 60 Seconds". The Mercedes have a more advanced version. No key, no start the car, period.
