Ok as most of you know the car i got, has a jdm b18c. The car runs pretty good but i found out the computer that is in the car is either a p04 or p06 that has been modified to work. Vtec kicks in at around 5800 and it revs to 8k or so. From everything ive read, the computer in the car is a non vtec computer. Would it being modded to work be just as good as me getting a jdm p72? If i wont see any gains or driving improvements then i will just leave it alone but if the p72 will help out then i would like to know. I know a guy that has a jdm p72 for sale and i think he told me the vtec kicks in around 4700. Im just wondering which ecu would be better. Thanks in advance

i would get the p72, you never know what was done to the other one to make it work, or even if its working properly. vtec is tricky, and alot of times its not a simple matter of when it engages. there is other programming that goes into it.

The modifyed ECU can work fine but the tuning is critical. If the car behaves badly you should have the engine operation confirmed by using a wide band o2 sensor, dyno, AND extensive road testing. If the VTEC is inop you will find this out during the evaluation. The P72 has a knock board which sometimes can be nice assuming you have it turned on in the ECU chip and you are using a knock sensor munted properly to the engine.
