I pulled the head last night and, so far, all of the intake valves are bent, but the exhaust valves look like they did not touch the piston. I am going to pull them tonight and check. There is a lot of carbon built up in the cylinder 1 intake ports. The spark plugs are the originals with 8 years and 110k, so I am thinking that poor ignition is the cause.
What is the best thing to remove the carbon and is there anything I should use to clean the head other than degreaser?
I will post some more pictures tonight.

Or an actual thread-chaser, which doesn't actually have cutting edges, it's just a threaded and heat treated bolt basically that is a little sharper pointed than a standard bolt. Pretty hard to find and probably expensive. Just make sure your bolts thread in with no hangups b-4 you put the head on, and like bomerman said, and I think the Haynes manual does too, lube the bolts w/clean motor oil. As far as the assembly lube, if you completely cleaned and degreased everything, or are installing a new cam-shaft you should use assembly lube, but if you just replaced the valves and didn't degrease everything you can just lube the cam up with oil.
