Coil pack screw missing an spark plug issue
I have a 2001 civic lx 4dr, and as I try do to some spark plug checking, I lost one of the black screw for the coil pack. Since this is a holiday, there is no place that I could pick those up.
So the queston is could I drive my car 4 -5 miles to a stealership without causing anymore damage to the spark plug/coil pack with one coil pack with no screw attached.
The other question is that one of the spark plug actually did not any hexagon shap anymore, so when I go in with a spark plug socket, I did not get any traction. All I see is a round shape looking at the spark plug from the top, and it seem the metal tubing just around the spark plug is kind of dark. Any suggestion for tackling a highly possible spark plug thread stripping task.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Coil pack screw missing an spark plug issue
swipe one of the 2 black nuts holding the throttle cable to the back of the valve cover, put it on the coil to hold the coil down. As far as stripping a spark plug.... there's little hope. You could try a very deep bolt extractor, if that even exists, to see if you could get it to bite. Otherwise take the head off and see if you can back it out from inside the combustion chamber. Spark plugs leave very little margin for error.... you may end up needing a new head if you can get it out. Although, I'm not sure how the hell you could use the wrong socket.... there's really only one that fits down there AND fits on the plug.
Last resort, take it to a machine shop and see if they can burn it out with an EDM.

Re: Coil pack screw missing an spark plug issue
there does exist a socket that is designed to remove stripped bolts, but i dont know if it will be deep enough to get over the end of the spark plug, all i can say is good luck man

Hi Boilermaker1,
I am trying to locate the part through majestic honda autoparts drawing but I don't know where to look. I tried looking into few categories but can't find it yet. Any pointer would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

BTW, if it need to have a head replacement, I should be able to get a D17a2 head and 02 sensor extension for just a bit more price than a D17a1 head?

you need a VTEC solenoid, the wiring, etc... (search VTEC head swap). if it comes to needing a new head, I know someone with a spare A1 head, and I have a spare A2 head.

Oh... um, I'm not shipping a head to canada. They're a good 60 lbs and I'm not dealing with customs.

Re: Coil pack screw missing an spark plug issue
Before you go trying to source and ship a new head, make absolutely sure you just aren't seating the spark plug socket incorrectly. In my experience, the plug hex is very difficult to strip out. You should have noticed a grinding, rounding out of the socket, and so on if you were stripping that part of it out. It may just be a case not having the socket seated correctly.
If the plug isn't giving you problems and you have reasonable mileage (kms in your case), just leave the ****er in there. Much easier than swapping a new head. Our plugs aren't supposed to be replaced until 100,000 miles or so on a normal service schedule anyway.
