Air conditioning DIY?

It was so freakin hot today, and I thought to myself, I wonder if there's a mod or DIY for making the air conditioning colder....

Does anyone know how to make the air conditioning colder?

warm up the car, get on the freeway going 65mph+ (keep speed constant), turn on a/c and press the recirc button shown above. wait 10 mins, after that the air coming out should be freezing cold.

Re: Air conditioning DIY?

using the recircu button is great. keeps car cool and saves some gas since the a/c compressor doesn't work as hard. or so I was told.

Re: Air conditioning DIY?

Yeah just recharged mine after 2yrs of putting up with "cool" air. I just used one of the recharger kits from an automotive store and filled up the compressor until the needle on the gauge was in the green (about 35 on gauge). Make sure you follow the directions but now mine blows so cold that i actually have to turn down the temp **** lol. Can't be without AC in Arizona haha

This sounds like a great idea, thanks for the suggestion.
It blows out cool air, but it's not cold enough to my liking I suppose. Because sometimes I get into my girlfriends car, and the air conditioning works just great compared to my car.

Yeah I use the recirculation button as well... but it just doesn't come out the way that I want.

I had a fender bender a while back, and I know they used a couple parts that were generic, like the radiator... and such do you think this has anything to do with it?

Re: Air conditioning DIY?

our a/c is by no means the greatest unfortunately. it uses the r134a stuff that is just as bad for the environment and doesnt get as cold. i had freon in my 87 jetta and man that thing blew icy cold air like from a freezer. it was crazy. moms old 92 accord is pretty good too. but esp with the civic tho, you need to be moving fast to make the compressor work at optimum. thats why i mentioned the freeway. drive for 10 mins with everything full blast keeping a constant speed and rpm around 3k, then see if its cold enough for you. city driving wont really get it cold cause its too hot and the compressor doesnt work as well. and if you have air blowing through the condenser (next to radiator), it helps alot.

Re: Air conditioning DIY?

The reason isn't the R134a. I had a 99 VW Passat and that car was a freezer using R134a. I think that our air conditioning from civic's are weak to hot places !! I went to 2 A/C shops and nobody solved this problem !!!

Re: Air conditioning DIY?

hmm ya could be. its just a small car. the new subarus are using electrical driven systems that dont rely on the motor, so it frees up hp and makes everything work better.

Re: Air conditioning DIY?

First a few simple things, if charging your a/c with those cheap cans of R134A doesnt work to your likings, listen to the a/c clutch kicking in and out. If you have the a/c on and ""race"" the engine (taking past 4k) the clutch will usually kick the a/c off to allow more power for the motor to use and blow only the eh cool air, also if the clutch cycles on and off repeatedly (every 3-6 seconds) you could be low on refrig. or the system is building up too much pressure. Its recommended to use the recirculation button cause the system takes the heat out of the air and after a little while the air inside the car is cooler than outside so there's less heat to take out and the air feels colder. The slower the fan speed the more heat the a/c system will take out of the air and the colder the air will be. let the car idle with a/c on recirc, and fan on low or second lowest setting, 5 min or so and it should be nice in there. The main difference between r134a and R12 is that R12 reacts faster than R134. If your car has a fixed orifice tube there's a slight chance it could have gunk in it hinderin the pressure, If you have a thermostatic expansion valve, then it could be having a bad signal or just need replacment cause it's not opening or closing enough to lower the pressure for cold air. the thermostatic expansion is a variable opening valve. You could have a defective clutch or a/c compressor, If you can hook up a gauge to the low and high side I can tell you better on what is causing your problem. for starters on your low side you want 30-31psig (psi guage) for a r134a system and you want 32-33psig for r12. anything below or anything 35+psi is a problem. hell there literly can be moisture in the system and that would be a big problem for your ""cool air"". well if you have any more information i know a little about a/c systems and repair so i could help you.

Re: Air conditioning DIY?

I dont even know if our cars have TXV's or orfice tubes.
Well anyways, I know that if sometimes the desiccant bags absorb too much moisture, they are overexposed and do not absorb as well as they can. Also, get honda or a shop to sniff out any leaks from your condenser.

btw, leaking R-134 into the atmosphere is illegal

Re: Air conditioning DIY?

wassup guys
I've got a problem with my ac as well. I was wondering if any of you have had this problem or if you know the cause of it. I have an 01 civic.
For starters it blows cold, but not as cold as my friends civic. So i guess it just needs to recharge. Im not really worried about that. What I am worried about is that when i turn on the ac, i hear a noise that sounds as if something is touching the fan for the car. I popped the hood and turned off the car. I spun the fans with my finger but didn't hear the noise. I ended up taking the car to an ac place. I let the guy hear the noise and he said that it sounded like the compressor was the problem. He said it would cost about $900 to change the compressor. My problem is that he came to that conclusion so quickly (within 2 minutes) without thoroughly checking it out so im not sure if I should listen to him.
Do any of you have an idea of what the problem could be?

my ac went out recently as well. is your air blowing colder than the outside air? mine was the same as the outside air so i went to recharge it and it was the same. so i took it to a shop and the guy said there are this nut that holds the clutch in place with the compressor came loose somehow and the splines that hold it in there feel out also. so the clutch was just dangling on there about to fall off. it made a wierd noise when i turned on my ac but not everytime. so the guy said the clutch was only partially engaging and that was the noise. i would go somewhere else if they are quoting you $900. they were talking 3-400 for me. but they got a pick and pull here thats selling one for $200. im hoping its not too hard to change.
