painting interior (help and opinion needed)
Hi there,
Please take a look at the pics attached. Let me know what you guys think of this colour scheme I want to do. If you can't tell, my car is a EBP 1.7EL. I know black would probably look better and would match the steering wheel and all that.
Dash: Also, I want to know how hard this would be? I've searched and I have an idea of what paint to use. But if you guys have had good experience with a particular brand of paint, primer and clear coat, please share. I still have a few questions though.
1. Would the finish be similar to original finish? Basically, I want the same finish and feel as before, just different colour. Clear coat wouldn't make it too glossy would it?
2. I assume all the painted I've painted blue (in Photoshop) are removable... I guess it would be best to take them out to paint. Has anybody done this by masking? How did that work out?
Blue Wood: Notice I've also colourized the wood trim... I know it would look hideous if they were to remain brown. The question is, how to create the blue wood trim look. Do you guys have any ideas? I know the wood trim in my car is just brown plastic with the wood pattern painted on and probably a clear coat on it.
Vents: For those of you who have dark interior in your Civics, your left and right vents are black right? I am thinking it would be hard to make them blue so maybe I can buy the black vents to replace my beige ones.
Sorry for the long post. Thanks in advanced for all your help.

that would definitely take some time. You'd be pulling out your entire dash, but it looks friggin awesome. I say do it if you have the time. As for buying black vents, that shouldn't be a problem. As for the clear coat, it depends on what kind you get, i think. There are some that are glossy and then there are some that are more flat. good luck man...that looks awesome

Thanks for all the props ...
I don't exactly know what's involved. I've taken out the centre console out before and that wasn't too hard at all. I'm not too sure about the wood either, but if I f*cked up the wood, I can't always get metallic trim pieces.
Ya I should take it to a shop and get a quote. I just figured this would be like a pretty cheap DIY if all I have to do is buy paint+primer+clear coat+sand paper maybe.

any fading or carcking?

To pull the vents out...I push the vent down all the way by puttin my fingers in that space...then using the vent...i pull up on the bottom part with my finger-tips...it pops out somewhat easy...maybe its cause ive done it at least 5 times now...I have no idea how to get to those other buttons like cruise mirror etc...I don't have a roof either...I have an LX
But I am finished...If anyone cares...click on my ride in my signature...The bottom pic shows the newely updated dash shot!!!

Nice job man

now questions:
1. what brand / type of paint did you use?
2. how much did you use?
3. how many coats?
4. did you put clear coat?
5. when masking off the other areas, did you just use regular masking tape?
6. would you say masking off areas is much easier than ripping everything apart?
thanks man.
once again, your car looks very nice.

1. what brand / type of paint did you use?----Foliatec...easy to use if add spray gun nozzle addition
2. how much did you use?- took 1/2 can a primer...1/2 can of silver paint
3. how many coats?----2 light coats of primer...3 light coats of paint
4. did you put clear coat?no
5. when masking off the other areas, did you just use regular masking tape?Duct tape stuck best to hard plastic...used regular masking tape where it would stick...
6. would you say masking off areas is much easier than ripping everything apart?YES...if you wanna pull it out you have to take off steering wheel, and whole bunch of other junk...TAKE YOUR TIME MASKING!!!...Time spent is well worth the good job when completed
Adios...Mark
Mark it looks hella tight dude, love the red/silver combo there, did u just do that main dash part? plain to do anything else now that u have done that part? and how long this take u bro?

so far just the main dash...im gonna do part of the doors soon...and maybe parts of the lower dash...and some more of the center console...It really didn't take to long...maybe 1 or so to prep and mask everything off...and the painting process only takes about 2 hours just because u gotta give time between each coat...then wait about 2 hours for it to dry...then voila!!!
It's easily done in one full day...Key is to only do a little at a time...and be careful...any more questions at all let me know...
lata...Mark

ok more questions for ya, I'm just asking for now... won't even have time to do it till after exams
did you clean the area first? if so, what did you use to clean?
can you still see the pattern of the original surface? and does the finish in terms of glossiness match the other non-painted areas?
as for primer, did you use the foliatec ones or a different brand?
as for the spray nozzle... doesn't the original foliatec can come with one? you had to buy one separately?
I know lots of questions...
oh one more, it there any foul smell on the painted surface now?

did you clean the area first? if so, what did you use to clean?Yes...with a swiffer sheet to get the dust...
can you still see the pattern of the original surface? and does the finish in terms of glossiness match the other non-painted areas?] I like that I can still see the pattern through the silver...and the gloss is nice...not too overpowering...
as for primer, did you use the foliatec ones or a different brand? same brand...stuff is easy to use
as for the spray nozzle... doesn't the original foliatec can come with one? you had to buy one separately?
When I say spray nozzle thing...I mean those attachments u add that instead of pushing on top of can snaps into the can that allows u to spray with a handle...it really allows for more even coating...U just gotta make sure to put light coats or it will run and u will lost the texture...
I know lots of questions...
oh one more, it there any foul smell on the painted surface now?[/q just smells like paint...but give it a week and it will be gone...

Coooooooool, looks like I'll be painting my vents soon. Is it necessary to sand the surface before priming it?
