Free 10W 40 fully synthetic

One of my friends dad's is in distribution for a oil company and he got me a gallon of 10W 40 fully synthetic for me and said he didnt have any 5W 20 but with 10W 40 neither I or my engine would notice a difference. Im not sure about that so anyone know plz tell me

Not that I want the 10W40 for free but wondered why it was free. Oh well, got me too.
